In Line Fuel Pump Fittment

Recommended Posts

allanallen

Evening all, I'm fitting a walbro external inline pump to my car and I'm unsure of the best way to do it.

My original plan was to have the pump right next to the outlet of the tank, then piped through the car to the fuel filter on the battery tray and then to the rail. However I'm struggling to fit the pump next to my tank and I've been told external pumps need a pre filter!

So my next thought was to swap the pump and filter round but would the pump be able to draw the fuel from the tank, through the filter and through the car?

In principle it looks like a good idea but would it be a nightmare and need bleeding everytime you started the car? Sorry if this is a daft question but I don't know much about fuel pumps :-(

Cheers Allan

Edit, just to add my car uses a non standard sumped tank.

Can you get the pump below the level of the tank? If so the pre filter will remain primed with fuel and there will be sufficient to supply the pump. On the DON we have the filter before the pump, no problem.

What about running the large bore outlet from the tank (wants to be 13mm or so at least) through the floor, and mount the filter and pump underneath?

The idea was to have the pump underneath I'm just struggling for room really. The filter fits underneath a treat mind and is a couple of inches lower than the tank, the pipework would also be lower until it got to the front bulk head where it will rise to to the height of the battery tray. Everythings 10mm on the fuel feed side.

are you using a lift pump?

405 works fine with tank - pump - filter, but they have a gauze on the pickup.

No lift pump

Didn't realise 405s used an external in line pump?
