Insane Insurance Prices

Recommended Posts

My policy is TPFT and i can drive other cars, can't remember who i'm insured with though!

same I'm with someone through Flux. The veccys FC though as the price difference is pretty much nothing.

I'm starting to build up my 'second policy NCB now. having only ever had one car on the go at a time, having two insured on separate policys means I can have 2 sets of NCB, they agreed to 'mirror' my current NCB from the vec this year and next year I'll be able to do that AND have a one year NCB as long as I god willing don't need to claim this year ;)

I got a quote from Flux today, it was £1776.15, I didn't even pay that on my first policy when I was a mere boy!

Flux beat my renewal quote but was still £50 more than I paid last year. Not happy but can't do anything about it.

What makes zero sense in my eyes is my situation - though im not complaining.

I had an awful week right at the start of my policy on my 6 in october 2008 where in 1 week I was involved in 2 dual responsibility claims - I might add the police sided with me on both times but hey what can you do bar accept it and carry on.

So my insurance from 700 quid at 20 for a 6 jumped to 1450 on renewal for my 205 1.9.

I stuck with it and got a years claims back on renewal my uncle suggested to my dad we try a multi car policy as it worked out silly cheap for him.

So off we go and wack everything expecting it to be a few quid cheaper overall.

Cars on the polcy 205 1.9. Alfa GTV v6 24v, Alfa GTA sportswagon and a VW Lupo 1.4 sport.

Both alfas have alot of mods so between them individually cost 1000 to insure.

Admiral quoted and we are currently paying a grand total of £986 pounds for all for cars for my mum and dad to drive them all and me to drive my 205. I pay a 600 chunk of that amount but still its insanely cheap in my eyes.

unfortunately that is a polite way of saying, we cannot insure you.

So if you can't insure him what would've happened if he'd decided to take the quoted policy out with you ? :)

They laugh all the way to the bank. You can get insurance for anything if you are willing to pay.

This is what maid me chuckle a bit, day after i passed my driving test (admittedly i had 1 ncb whilst learning) I insured my 1.9 Third party, with a value of £750, with all the previous owners modifications declared and on a unlimited milage policy from Flux for £960 per year.

Now when the pug had a few issues I phoned them up changed the car to a 1.2 M reg Corsa and the price jumped to £1600 per year.

To me that makes no sense

There's no point in looking for any logic, or lack of it! Yes, it can be frustrating, but you have to accept that there are so many variables at work here, that you will get some odd premiums. That's why you should always get quotes BEFORE changing your car :)

Actually, to me, that makes quite alot of sense.

After all, which do you think is more typically owned by inexperienced drivers and crashed these days - a "classic" 205 GTi, or a Corsa? I'd hazard a guess that things like Corsa's and Saxo's throw up a big red flag when a young driver wants to insure one, as they must have an appaling claim history and if I were running an insurance company I'd want a high premium to cover that risk.

The insurance grouping of a car makes surprisingly little difference in my experience - I remember that a 306 DTurbo (group 5) was much more expensive for me to insure than the 205 GTi (group 14) that I owned at the same time. Go figure.

When I phoned and complained about the stupid price they said that the diesel was insurance group 22 :) and the Rallye was group 7, Sounds like bit of a f*** up! In response to Anthony's logic I suppose far, far less poeple crash 205 Rallyes (it actually comes up on the insurance policy 205 special edition Rallye) as there are none about, and a fair few 1.8D get written off.

I always thought group 20 was the highest rating! :)

They changed it a while back, from the 1-20 system, to 1-50 B)

my current fleet isn't too bad to insure now, but still a little more than a year or two back, the 205 can be insured as a classic, the 405 there's hardly any left so they don't class it as much of a risk, similar with the ZX, just over £330 for any of them now.

I'm trying to re-insure the mi16 at the moment, and renewal had gone up to £500 (was £400 last year).

Mulled it over for a few days, decided that it was still a reasonable deal as it includes trackday and european cover... rang them back.... "Oh, it's gone up again. It's now £550"

:D

Just picking up on the subject of TPFT Vs FC again, I just got some quotes on Compare The Market.com

1999 Saab 9-5 HOT Aero estate (manual)

Value £2000

Annual mileage 3000

Social, domestic and pleasure only

Kept at home during the day

Kept in locked compound at night

Aged 32

Driving 12 years

10 years NCB

1 claim for £2k for a write off (not agreed yet, so this detail is just a guess)

Fully Comp came out at £550 for the best quote, but with a ridiculous £700 excess!

Reduced the excess to £250 and the quote went up to £8xx (can't remember exact figure)

Changed it to TPFT and it went up to............over £1100

So don't assume TPFT is going to be cheaper ;)
