Whats This Awful Noise

when coming upto junctions i get this awful noise, it comes when im coasting in and out of gear

 

i tried to pick up the banging too from the engine bay but the camera doesnt pick that up but thats another story

would no oil cause this ? not that i have checked but i will be now you've said diff..

 

the box is off miles and has been working fine before i took the engine to bits, hmm

if it was the diff wouldnt it make that noise all the time and not just while coasting ?

so if the lower engine mount is either shot, or not up to the job it may cause the down pipe to vibrate either against the bulkhead and or subframe producing a similar sound. It only happens on coast down because when you lift the engine rotates forwards on it's mounts. It may happen more when the bushes are heat soaked and softer.

 

Although the audio quality is good, does it do it when you accelerate and lift, accelerate and lift.

 

If it was the diff, you would assume the thrusting faces of the gears (not sure if that's the right term) would be more susceptible to wear than the slowing down faces.

 

Might also be worth dropping the gearbox oil though a fine sive into something clean (so you can re use it) to check for metal particles, both the filler and drain plugs are accessible with it jacked up and passenger wheel off.

kyepan, you were spot on, turned out to be the exhaust hitting the heat shield, ive pushed that out of the way..

 

the engine did move a little too much because of the upper mount on the left, ive stuck some washers behind to close the gap..
