Jacking Point - Trolley Jack And Axle Stands

Recommended Posts

Huggy bear

All, not really a technical question but where is the best place to jack the 205 (J reg) at the front and rear with a trolly jack and where to place the axle stands...

Pictures much appreciated if possible

The jacking point is located at the front and rear of the sill, you should be able to see where the thickness is doubled in the vertical lip. You can jack it up here and then support it on the front subframe beneath the wishbone rear bush mounting, but that's no good if you want to take the subframe off! If you have a nice low entry trolley jack you can jack it up by the subframe and support it by the jacking point on the sill.

You can also use a good long plank of wood on top of the axle stands then lower the sill areas on top of it, make sure the axle stands triangle point faces each other, like this >< it will mean they wont fall if the car got knocked for instance.

I always support and jack by the beam and subframe, where possible of course.

thanks for your responses but I'm still having a bit of trouble understanding where they need to go- I can see that jacking up on the sub frame with a piece of wood is best but I'm still a little unsure of where to put the axle stands-- if any one has a picture of the underneath and can draw circles on there to spell it out I would be very very grateful -- Sorry for being a a numpty ;O)

When ever you want to put a car on axle stands, always use a good very solid thick part of the chassis to rest the car on them and make sure its flat and secure. Put some alloys or wheels underneath the car as a safety aspect and make sure the ground you are using is hard and flat like concrete.

To be honest with you, as you are having a bit of trouble with this maybe you should read a Haynes manual and do some research so you are more confident with this type of job because it can be dangerous working under a car.

Here is a picture for you, this is where i put the axle stands and the red arrow shows where the jacking point is on the sill, this bit is also near the rear wheel part of the sill and is the same on the other side of the car, if you look at that area you will see the sill has dented marks where the 205 jack goes.

Hope this helps.

Literally right at the front and rear of the sills, you can't miss them! If you still can't find them, step away from the spanners. :D

Put the trolley jack in through ther front of the car, go past the engine, and jack it in the centre of the subframe (the thick bar behind the engine). Once raised, put your axle stands under the subframe too, one each side. About where the subframe is bolted to the body (you can see a load of bolt heads on the subframe when looking from underneath)

At the back, do similiar, but use the rear beam, the tube just in front of the spare wheel.

Do you mean the 'bar' between the side sub-frame arms or the plate bar of the sub-frame where the bolts go through ?

Sorry, did not make that clear enough. The thick square box section piece. Not the round bar.
