Recommended Posts

stu8v

I'm looking at getting a diff for my soon to be track prepared mi16 powered 205.

Help me choose as I cant decide between a plated or ATB, thats even before we get onto which make..........!

90% of the time it will be used on track BTW

Whats your experiences?

Thanks

If it's track use, I'd personally go for a plate diff everytime.

I'd go ATB personally.

Had one on my old 309 Mi16, was so well suited to the car (non PAS, quickrack). Worked well to pull it out of the corners, yet didn't mess with steering feel.

My new 205 Gti has a plate diff, it's not as bad as people say in terms of dragging steering and has been ok without PAS. It does however mess with the steering feel a bit, cars feels less pure to drive, and can't say there is noticeably less traction.

If it was a forest / gravel car, no comparison then, would have to be a plate diff.

Cannot see the point of ATB's, they are rubbish and thats having used one this season giving them the benfit of the doubt, Not much good at anything, poor turn in and overall grip and again with a wheel in the air act like a open diff so again no good. OK for a std road car with good power as the std diff's are prone to breaking.

Save your money and dissapointment and go with a Plate Diff

Looks like a plate is the way to go then, any merits in different manufacturers?

Plate, although following my experience there is no way I'll ever buy anything from Tran-x in the future.

Plate diff every time for me too, a few years back me and a mate ran a 1600 fester, which had ford Viscous diff in it, the quaiffe had just come out so we thought its a proper after market diff so we bought one fitted it and..............................regreted it, it used to pick up wheels wheel spinning one wheel all the time, it even started tramping something the Viscous diff had never done!

So now if i have to fit a diff its a Tran x every time, from my Mini to My Pugs.

Is it worth geting say a ZF over say a Tran-x or Gripper?

Yes and no, ZF is a very good diff but depending on the type you may be limited to the CWP you can use and again early ones use the different inner CV Spline length which I think can be overcome with the 306 inner one, Or the shafts where around £800.00 each last time I looked

But Gripper and Tran X are about the same really, Both offer good service and back up

I use a 306 inner shaft on mine, or you can chop 7mm off a 205 shaft to make it the same as a 306 shaft. I can include the shafts which are nearly new if need be

Looks like Ill buy new then, the safest option IMHO. At least there will be a warrenty/comeback of some sort.
