Mi Oil Pump

Hi all Im in the middle of re building an MI16 or should I say a BX16V

And after my last engine went pop I thought I would rebuild this one rather than just chuck it in.

Ive stipped down the oil pump to fit the uprated spring and check the condition

When I stripped it down I found some what i would say looked like wire pubes.lol and 2 shavings of alloy in the strainer.

I suspect the wire stuff is from a broken down oil fillter at some point? but cant see where the shavings are from.

I should have the crank and pistons out tomorrow so will inspect a bit further.

Forgot to say the engine came out a low millage running with no rattles bx 16v

The "pubes" are probably from the oil filler tower, which has wire mesh in it that tends to break down with age, drop into the sump and get picked up by the oil pump.

I second that.

 

Found quite a lot of wires in my mi engine on my last rebuild. Some were still in the sump and most of them stuck in the pump.

 

The alu bits could be from the pistons?

I found a similar sort of thing when I rebuilt my oil pump, IMO it's just swarf left over from machining the block, it certainly looks like it. I'd imagine the block cleaning was automated at the factory so there's bound to be the odd engine with little bits left behind.

Thanks for the replys.I removed pistons and the crank today and found no signs of any damaged alloy so must just have been shavings from the cast?

Shells have a few light scores but nothing serious and crank looks perfect.
