Immobilizer- Diy Or Professional?

Recommended Posts

Huggy bear

I need an immobilizer for the 205, is there a DIY unit available or is this best left to the professionals- Don't want anything space age ,just something out of site to keep the pikeys from nicking her in case they do get in.

Cheers in advance

From the replys to previous alarm topics the consensus seems to be if you kow enough about electrics you will get a better job if you do it yourself, BUT you will need to get it certified if you want it as cat 1 for your insurance.

I put a toad ai606 in my 205 a while back. I think the hardest part is deciding where to put the unit, mine went behind the stereo so nicely out of the way but it meant taking the stereo and centre console out. It might be better, or easier under the drivers side dash if it'll fit.

I also used some Maplin electric door motors so I had central locking and I fitted mine easily enough and know a bit more about how things work. I'm confident it'll all work just fine as I know what was done and how.

In terms of time, i suspect it took me a good day to do it all in total. I just spread it over a few evenings.

If you are getting someone else to do it, check some of there work out first, In all my years of 205's I would say I could get most started within 10 seconds of any Immobilzer fitted they are fitted that badly, Thats without cutting or joining any wires either

Yeah but all they are is detteronts. The trouble with most older or newer petrol cars is you can get them running pretty easy with usually a few lengths of wire in the right places.Where as deisels are alot more complex its not as easy to change a fuel pump .

And at the end of the day the monkeys that are stealing 205`are doing so because they look easy to pinch beacuase there old etc.

Back to the topic id definatly make sure you get an alarm installed the best detterent .And id do it your self at least you can fault find your self and be happy in the knowledge its done right. You`ll get a wirinig diagram with the alarm/imobilizer you get . Just make sure you use the right rating wire everywhere to avoid fire hazards .Other than that its really easy mate give it ago

Sadly a lot of modern alarm fitters are s*ite, I once had to have a cat 2 immobfitted to my old 405 mi16 for the insurance. About 4 months later it crapped out, in the middle of Sheffield at my then gf's house, I had no tools to do anything. No joke within 5 minutes with my bare hands I had linked it out and it started onthe key again. Said installers were called back to do a better job and then reported to thatcham.

Yep do a really good job of soldering all the connections, partly removing the dash running the wires in the loom to make it look factory and using liberal amounts of black pvc to disguise it. So that when Miles fits a new engine loom he's taken by surprise!

LOL

So what other quick options are out there, wheel clamp, wheel lock etc , I have also seen battery isolators which would obviously do a job, is there a more friendly version or diy job I could do (bearing in mind I very unskilled at mechanical electrics) . Just literally something to stop them stealing it that doesn't take an age to initialise when I'm parking it up.

BTW it's only a sunday car so is covered 99% of the time but always nice to have the protection from the little scrotes.

Cheers again

2-Pugs

Here's one I have used for years. Open the glovebox, and pop down the fuse board. The fuse at the right hand end - eg closest to you when you're sat in the drivers seat - is for the fuel pump. Remove it when you park up and your 205 won't be going anywhere. Peugeot were even kind enough to add a slot to store said fuse along with the other spares. Granted, someone with 205 knowledge or a fair bit of time will get around it, but it's a good deterrent nonetheless. On more than one occassion I have got back into my 205 and muttered expletives at it when it wouldn't start, only to realise that I had forgotton to refit the fuse ;)

I personally think one of the biggest deterrants are the circular stop lock which fit over the whole of the steering wheel. Sure, they are bulky, but they provide a good degree of visual deterrant stick em in a footwell when you are driving around - just don't crash though because you don't want one in the side of the head! For around £80, they offer a fair bit of security.

Also consider that most immobilisers cannot be seen which won't stop the pikey so and sos from at least trying to start it, thus resulting in a broken/bent door, smashed window, smashed barrels, wrecked looms etc. At least the stop locks might, and I say might, at least stop the little scrotes before they bend the door in, as they might think, nah too much hassle.

However, the stop locks don't contribute to the cat requirement of many insurance firms though, which generally comes in if the car is valued more than £2k.

And remember, no matter how hard you try, if they really really want it, they will find a way to take it, whether it has an alarm, immobiliser, stop lock or not.

I'm sure some people will know that I always bleat on about making sure you don't leave anything on view in your car. It's all about visual deterants etc.

Well the other day I found out that some twat (kids I reckon) had tried to get in my 205 whilst parked in our "secure" underground car park (it's only secure if the other dopey/lazy f***ers living here can be arsed to shut the side gates when the go in and out. Pricks). And to get to the point, I had the steering wheel off, the alarm armed and LED blinking, no headunit in (literally fresh air and cables dangling), no door speakers (grills off and empty holes on display), and nothing else on display in the car............except I had an open box and 2 Ikea bags of manky old parts in the back on full view. The fact I knew they are worthless and of no significance to anyone but another 205 owner counts for nothing. They picked on my car out of all the others, and it could only be because of this. So it's now empty again.

But just to be on the safe side, I've also disconnected the CAS, because I figure that even if they get past the immobiliser they'll have a mare of a time tracking down a disconnected CAS, in a semi-lit engine bay. I could go OTT and disconnect x number of other sensors but it'd just be more hassle for me next time I go to start it!

My favourite way to disable my 205 is to remove my aftermarket ECU. Mine is GTi6 running ITBs so the likelihood of a thief just happening to be carrying around the same ECU I use with a GTi6 + ITB map on it is pretty remote. The ECU is stored in the glovebox so I can conveniently and quickly remove it. 8)

As said above though, this doesn't count towards anything on the insurance front. However, they loved my CAT 2 immobiliser, even though it was shown to me its easy to get around that by reconnecting a couple of wires. Silly insurance people.

Most of the time i aint using my 205 i either disconnect the battery and take the king lead either off and put it somewhere safe or just disconnect it,

As most the time the little scrotes who nick cars dont know much about the workings of an engine,

So if an alarm/immobiliser is out of your price range simple measures can be taken to protect our precious 205's
