Engine

morning all,

i have in my posession a black gti, (finally) i love these little cars and have always wanted one, i grabbed this off a so called mate a few months ago with the intention of restoring it, now i know a bit about cars and engineering, so got to work with stripping the interior, a leaky seal in the boot meant most of the interior was ruined, so the seats went, as they were cloth and basically falling apart i skipped them, i kept the runners and repaired them with my welder,

Now the difficult part, on the documents and the body, it says 1.6?

But i know for a fact someone has dropped a different lump into her!!! But am confused to what lump it is, how to get pars for it etc etc

My intention is to totally strip the engine and do a full re-build, whilst i'm doin this the body will get a total overhaul as well

so my question really is how do i find out what engine i have, and how easy is it to find parts?

Cheers

try posting a picture on here first

that way, someone will tell you exactly what it is, or tell you were the engine code will be

Most parts are still easyish to get, depending what engine you have and to what extent you want to rebuild the lump. Peugeot dealers can get most service parts (search for threads on service box for info on part numbers), also folk such as Miles on here can get the more unusual parts sometimes.

In terms of what engine it is with check for engine codes on the block or post up some photographs as some on here can id a lump fir thirty paces.

Welcome to the forum.

Usual way to spot the difference between a 1.6 and a 1.9 is to have a look underneath and if the sump bolts straight to the block it's a 1,6 if it has a space plate between the sump and block then it should be a 1.9.

Post up some piccies of the engine and i'm sure the resident experts will help you out.

Round the corner from me I see, sure it hasn't got some nuclear powered engine under the hood?

Need any help mate with it at all just ask, I'd be happy to pop over and have a gander.

Likewise, your actually next door to my work (the big industrial place the size of a small town that has protestors outside every month). Don't mind dropping by for 5mins on the way to work.

The inlet manifold is an XU10 item, can't quite make out whether the whole engine is though!

405 SRI or BX gti engine I believe, still an XU9.

it went like s*it off a shovel, before i stood her up thinking of what to do, bet if i connected the bat and twisted the key she would burst into life!!

anyways are these good engines, would i be doing it justice in refurbishing it?

any thoughts?

cheers

As welshpug says it is a 405 SRi or BX GTi engine. It is a XU9J2 engine I believe. They have a lower compression ratio than the XU9JA which is the 205 1.9 GTi engine. If you put a head off a XU9JA engine on one of these I think you would have a good high compression engine as they have flat top pistons in them (dont know if it would be too high though when the 1.6 pistons in a 1.9 raises the compression a good bit?). I am going getting pistons out of one of these to raise the compression ratio on the XU5JA engine I am building for my rallycar.

Pugtorque said these do go very well for what they are, much like an Mi16 in character just without the last 1000 rpm and peak power, they have a very decent torque curve.

Apologies i stand corrected, i'm not actually sure why i said xu10 when i actually have one of those inlet manifolds and know they're from a BX/405 1.9!! :D

yup, 405 SRi, I have had a few of these in the past (the manifold is a pig to get off due to hidden bolts)

I have a cam out of one of these on top of the beer fridge in the garage.
