Steering Rack Bolts

Recommended Posts

I'm really struggling to attach my rack back on my subframe! I'm pretty sure the bolts are the correct ones but not so sure about the nuts. How are you supposed to tighten then as no matter which way round i put the bolt it doesn't get held in place by the slot on the rack. Hope that makes sense.

The bolt goes through from the opposite side to the rack (front side). Screw the nuts on by hand at first, then pull the bolt out as far as it will go so the nut slots into the rack to stop it spinning, and tighten the bolt.

Edit:

Are you using the original rack nuts? Make sure that they are 16mm hex's otherwise they won't fit in the slots on the rack.

Like Cam says the nuts slot into the rack.

Thats the bit i wasn't sure of, they catch initially but once you put some firmer pressure on they spin so i guess they are the wrong ones.

Have you had the rack off the car? If not, the slots might just be full of crap and stopping the nut from going in properly.

Yeah its all off the car. I've managed to remove/refit in the past so i assume my current car had the wrong nuts on it, or maybe they have worn a bit?
