Mi16 Cylinder Head On Xu9ja

Recommended Posts

Tjalde^

Hello,

Is it possible to put a MI16 cylinder head straight on my 1.9 GTI engine? Or do I have to make some seriouse modifications?

Best regards,

Jens-Jakob

It fits, because the blocks and liners are suitably similar, but think about it.

8v pistons won't suit the extra valves (cut outs will be wrong) and you may have to mess about with cam belt tensioners.

Cranks are different too but not a major issue and rods give better oil control. Mi16 pistons would be required and further mods needed.

Simple answer is no, although a combination of parts in a rebuild make a good engine.

Oh, I thought it was pretty simple, but it requires too much right now. Thank you for the answer anyway.

I tried to search for "Mi16 cylinder head" but the results were not that good. If you can find something good, when you have time it would be great.

...and you may have to mess about with cam belt tensioners.

Just to elaborate on this, late 8v blocks have the 'hole' for the extra tensioner so just need to be drilled & tapped to take it.

I must conclude that this is not an easy way. A mix with the engine numbers and I am Danish makes it all a bit difficult to understand.

I know many says, it is easier to replace the engine with a mi16. The problem is (at least here in Denmark) that the engines are pretty rare and pretty expensive if you look condition. Furthermore i have problems with getting all the tools and a garage to have fun with this.

If you would recommend a good way to add more power to my standard engine, what would then be a succesful way?

Btw. thank you for all the information and links.

Hi,

If you want it to stay road legal fitting a mi16 is a difficult path.

Road legal 8v engine with more power means all the usual suspects: Cam, worked on head, high compression pistons, engine management, exhaust...£££££££££££ and lots of them!

I´m from denmark as well feel free to PM me in danish.

/Martin

Honestly I do not know the shipping costs. My guess would be, that it is pretty expensive with the shipping. What does an mi16 engine cost in UK?

It could cost anything really, getting a bit rare and always treat it to a rebuild!

Hmm.. I will have to wait for the right engine offers here in Denmark then.

I know, and it is cheap as well. But how would you carry an engine?

In a box in the car.

Alternatively I could send you an engine kit. I send pistons, block if you want it (or use yours), an Mi head ready to use, GTI6 sump, exhaust manifold if you want, cam cover (freshly powder coated red, black, white or silver), Gti6 inlet manifold and water housing.

You can choose ECU (I have OE ones if you need) and you use your rods and crank. This would keep the weight and cost down. I can also help with cams, pulley and belt. Your water pump should be fine.

Engine in a box if you like. 600 euro plus depending on package.

Mi16 head will fit a XU9JA engine just perfect.

It would be a nice base for a turbo engine compression-wise I think.. without doing any calcs on it though

We've answered the original question, i.e. does it fit. Yes it does.

But is it a quick and easy route to transform an 8v into a 16v? No it isn't.

It's not confusing at all if you read what's written, which I appreciate is not necessarily that easy if your main language isn't English.

So yes it does, but to do what you're hinting at involves quite a lot of additional work and ultimately costs. Cheaper and easier to put a complete XU9J4 in, which I think everyone agrees should be rebuilt first, and in doing so I'd use 8v rods, extend the oil pump pickup and use a windage tray and trap door/baffled sump.
