Lost Locking Wheel Bolt Key

Recommended Posts

Moz_Goodwood

right quick story, bought my goodwood a little while back, was told the locking wheel nut key was in the car, searched high and low but cant find it, previous owner is certain its there but it aint

anyway ive tried quite a few different things now to get them out as its the only thing really stopping me cracking on with the engine conversion, ive tried knocking on a socket with no joy, chiseling it, welding a nut on but couldn't get it strong enough, getting it red hot etc etc and nothing will budge them

so its come down to drilling them which is a ballache but if i have to then so be it

i thought i'd give one last shot before the drill comes out to see if anyone has got the same locking nuts and could lend me ,sell me the key for them

heres a pic

cheers

paul

As i've said on the 6 forum, I have one but in Leeds at the mo.

I have one where all the pins have fallen out and one with the pins in. Perhaps you could bodge some pins into it?

It lookd like the standard ones sold from Halfords several years ago, they may still do them, and at least that way you will have a nut for life.

Drilling them really isn't THAT hard, a couple of hours with some decent drill bits and you can have them off.

However you can and I have successfully welded another wheel bolt to that style of locker before now and got them off, you need a powerfile or similar to get the top flat surface back to clean steel, then with a MIG welder at least 100A will do a good enough penetration weld to get those out. Only thing to make sure is leave the weld to cool completely before trying to undo.

I couldn't find the locking wheel nut for a 205gti I had, I did manage to get them off by hammering a socket around the outside of them. I then found the locking wheel socket thing behind the badge bit in the middle of the steering wheel!! Might be worth having a look if you haven't already.

on these old man cars they have a wooden steering wheel so no center bit like a proper gti.

I had this problem solved by, instead of whacking something over the bolt, You hit the head of the bolt very hard with something very big and very heavy. The idea is the force squashes the alloy behind the head of the bolt every so slightly and means you can then just unscrew them by hand! Worked for me and didn't damage the wheels.

mmmmmmm worth a shot i suppose

as for the other ideas, the sockets wont fit over the top as the nut is to close to wheel, the removal kit did feck all, and the weld just kept breaking, (cant really get in properly to get a decent amount of weld on)

cheers for everyones help

Not being rude but find a bigger welding machine or a better welder! I've got those exact locking bolts off 1.9 wheels before with 4 off old Corsa wheel bolts and half an hour with the MIG.

What welder are you using and how were you trying to weld it? If your welder is one of those cheapo ones (SIP / Clarke etc) you'll need to have the amps whacked right up on maximum and the wire feed relatively low in order to get good penetration and a nice strong weld on metal that thick.

Had you tried welding the nut on when you took that photo, because there's very little evidence of weld on there.

Edit:

Yes, as Tom says you should be able to get a strong enough weld to get those things out no matter how stuck they are.

I had exactly the same locking wheel bolts on my wheels with no key.

Use a small dremel tool to put a small chamfered edge on the inner circle which is raised by about 5 mm, then find a suitable bi-hex socket which is slight too small (iirc 14mm halfords) and hammer it on hard until you feel it stop against the main part of the locking bolt, and undo

I only used the dremel on one bolt, more force and a BFH sorted the rest.

If he did, he would have got it off.

As above.. this would be the first thing I'd try in your situation, the second would be a wheel nut removal tool, then welding, then drilling as a last resort.

I've removed a few of those in my time. Good old fashioned imperial socket wacked on.

could try a small bolster/metal chisel and try to knock it round to loosen it off.

Shame your not more local, I;ve got 3 of these which have so far removed all types of these fitted,

The removal tools don't fit that well on these due the the dia being too big and the middle tends to screw up due to Tyre Fitter's doing the things up

i think thats why im struggling to get it off, its been reemed up that tight the welds are breaking before its turning the nut

thanks for the suggestions everyone, a very kind forum member is ending me some tools to borrow, i'll get back to this thread if they come out with them, if not it'll be drill time

cheers

Does the car drive? reason I ask is you can go for a Drive left foot braking if your condifent in doing this to get some heat into the hub's and wheels, this will help free the bolt off

Same here & exactly as i've found.

There's loads of threads about this already, wang the 3 wheel bolts up tight, smack a 14mm socket on it and undo it, carefully...

This is the way i've done a fair few now, and it works most of the time, better than the assorted/broken keys.

Although i have had to drill a couple out too!
