Tipping A Car On Its Side

Recommended Posts

omega

got to do a couple of bits of welding and thought i might take the chance to remove all the old underseal and replace with some new.now as i dont have a ramp, pit or car roller i was wondering if i could roll the car on to its side[thinking about 40 degrees] as this would make the job easier.i would drain all the fluids and remove the battery.

my concerns are

1...... how to do it[if its possible] so all tips welcome

2 ......not doing any damage to the car

3........not doing any damage to me!!!

I was looking through a project thread and someone had it proped on it's side for similar reasons to you. Think it was someone called lukesaddy or something.

There you are, one of the links on post 17.

Looks like the way to do it is just get a large friend with some weight behind him ;)

if you rock it on its side and still have it on its wheels i reckon you'd do the bearings some damage if left for a sustained period, especially if the engines still in the car.

Me too! ;)

As said, with windows, engine etc it's probably easier just to get some axle stands and do it that way.

I've tipped cars onto their side from time to time, main thing is if possible tilt so the g/box is down to make sure that g/box oil does not weep past the seal onto the clutch.

A few old tyres will help cushion things, OK on something you are not bothered about but I wouldn't do it to a show car.

i think it would only be best to do if it was just a shell. you will have to do it like the rest of us on your back geting coverd in welding splater!

I did in a 1600 gti on a road rally and i was going a lot faster than thirty, should have painted it while it was on its roof. Though the breaker would not have gave me more for it! :o
