Zero Dash Project

Recommended Posts

Hi

I am planning to totally remove my dash, all the parts, speedo, rev counter, everything, so it will just be the bulk head showing - the car will remain road legal.

I will need the storks, indicators, lights etc but nothing else. I plan to get a seperate speedo and rev counter, but thats it. Also wants to get a loom off a basic 205 as there is so many wires I no longer need....

Has anyone else done this? I know lots do it on non road legal track cars, but can this successfully be done on a road car (and pass an MOT!)

thanks

Rob

don't you need to have some form of internal lighting to indicate lights are swithced on and also for your direction indicators?

yes you do, that can be in illuminated switches as far as I know, I'd imagine kitcar builders would know more about this kind of minimalism :)

ah yes, I will have the hazard warning switch, and the rear fog light switch, both of which are lit internally. These will have to remain in the car. I dont need a dash unit for an MOT though..

Why not keep the standard instrument panel and save a whole lot of hassle?

If you really want to remove it though, you're going to need indicator and headlamp tell-tales, and you should definitely fit oil pressure and coolant temp warning lights at the very least.

Edit: A fuel gauge might also come in handy! :)

I got seriously fed up with trying to get the dash to fit nicely in my 309 (plus I couldn't really see over it with the seats being so low :) )so I made up these clamps to mount the instrument cluster

I've also made up 2 more clamps to mount an ally centre console that will run between the dash bar and the tunnel. Although i'm reasonably happy with what ive done i'd much sooner have a dash fitted.

With the 2 gallon tank he has fitted it's probably a bit overkill

allanallen and Cameron: Do you not get a reflection of the clocks on the windscreen? I found that with no cowling the reflection was very distracting.

Those clamps are neat though, I just used cable ties! :)

Thats an idea - but no need to have a fuel gauge as it is a 2 gallon tank in the rear!

ok...so I will keep the dial unit, but get the rest out....

I have no understanding or experience of auto electrics....so would you think it is safe if I remove the dash without messing with any of the wires....could this be done?????

Once removed I will then ask an auto electrician to do all the wiring clean up...just think I could save on costs if I do the donkey work

thanks

As most of my dash has been removed (glove box, hearters, plastic surround around the dials etc) where are the main screws located to get the final shell of the dash off?

Any hints would be great

thanks

under the scuttle panel below the wndscreen on the outside are 2 nuts that hold the main part of the dash in place, theres also 2 nuts one on either end of the dash that attach the dash to a bracket at the base of the A pillar

Is that road legal? I only ask as I'm wondering what you've done with the fog switch etc?

Looks awesome by the way, and has given me silly ideas. I've only kept the top half of my dash as it's handy for the cubby hole above the fuseboard. But with harness' on, you can't reach it anyway! Just chuck crap on the passenger seat.
