Driveshaft Lengh Problem

Recommended Posts

right people i realy need your help! spent hours today taking many meausrement of my driveshafts!!

right my car used to be fine with 205 standard length shafts (tu fitment) with 309 gti lower arms

now i have a gti-6 and xsara vts gearbox with a nice new trans x (cheers miles!)

i bought new 309 gti driveshafts (shaftec) well new secondhand

and the os fits fine, but the ns goes into the gearbox fine (doesnt need swaping with the xsara inner because of the lsd) and is to long as i can only get the bottom ball joint on

when the hub is forced inwards meaning there is zero travel for the shaft to move inwards.

i have measured the 309 shaft led flat to be 620mm and compressed 595mm.

i also measured 445mm between the two mating faces when the shaft was compressed

i then meaured between the two mating faces on the car when the lower arm was installed (from the hub driveshaft seat and the diff seat for the shaft) and it measured 440

and the o/s has about 5mm of free inward travel.

the 309 shaft is also the same lengh etc as the xsara vts shaft!

does maybe anyone have some dimesions of the 309 wishbones so i can ensure i have the correct ones not 205 wishbones!

so anyone have any suggestions at all or have i made a simple error as i am at a loose end ............

do both wishbones look identical? 205 ones have ribs, 309 tend not to.

309 shafts compressed should be 610/850 mm long end to end, 1.9 205 ones being exactly 10mm shorter.

309 shaft should not be the same length as a Xsara VTS shaft, they are 30mm or longer at least IIRC, so sounds like the wrong shaft.

not sure on the exact length of a 309 wishbone, but I found this - http://forum.205gtidrivers.com/index.php?showtopic=103142

GSF Supplied my mate with 2 long shafts before, 1 205 and 1 306.

This were ment to be a set of 205 shafts.

Belters, double check what they have given you.

Also check the collar hasn't moved off the bearing seat.

well cheers welshpug! my arm is 620mm which takes that out the equation.

here are some figures from camberly if you are interested :

309 shaft compressed: 576mm

205 1.9 compressed: 567mm

205 tu 1.4 compressed: 575mm

xsara vts compressed: 585mm

shaft i have 590

weirdly my tu shaft is the same length as a 309 gti shaft so i used that to ensure i have enough travel with the shaft and it seems fine so i will order a 309 gti shaft...

and the one i have at the moment is 590mm so i havnt a clue which car it is is from...
