Bonnet Hinge Bolt Seized,

Recommended Posts

SurGie

Hi Member's,

Last weekend i tried to take the bonnet off at the hinges ready for when i re-spray the engine bay and scuttle panel areas. One of the bolts had seized then the bolt head broke off .

I have an idea on how to fix it without having the remianing bolt shaft removed, let me know if it wont for any reason.

I thought of putting the hinge onto the hinge bearing along with a washer on the outer side, then use a larger washer with a small hole against the bolt hole, then mig weld into the hole to the remaining seized bolt shaft.

Cheers.

drill it then easy out, or just drill out till the thread can be collapsed and send a tap through the captive nut.

helps if you have a small bodied or 90 degree drill, left handed drill bits rock too, was great watching Colin Satchell making light work of sorting DrSarty's snapped bonnet hinge bolt, access to the right tools makes life so much easier!

IIRC when Dan Taylor fixed mine he just welded a stud on where the bolt would have been, and then just used a nut on it to tighten the hinge back.

I did think about drilling it out but doing it that way takes more time of which is in short supply for my project at the moment and its only a hinge fixing, before i took the hinge off it stayed on even with the bonnet been tested up and down so its not like it needs a lot of strength to keep it on the bearing.

Another thing is iv never tried re-taping before so i'd prefer the way GLP's and my idea if it works to sort it out well enough, i was lucky it Was only one bolt.

I wont be sorting it out until the engine bay re-spray has finished within a few months, but as soon as i have welded the washer on ill keep this thread up-dated.

Cheers.
