Battery Inside The Car

Recommended Posts

joe1joe

right people i need your advice.

i am going to be putting the battery inside my car (track car) and have been looking at the ODYSSEY EXTREME RACING 25 BATTERY which i am concerd it may be under rated for a gti-6 which will be used all year round??

but these are very light around 9kg!!

but i have spoken to merlin motors and they have said the battery REALY do not like going flat and often to not recover like a lead acid battery.

anyone recomend anything elese? excide or optima maybe? much more heavy though......

I wouldn't use this type of battery on an everyday car, they are quite high maintenance as Merlin rightly said.

Your best bet IMO is a standard (063 IIRC) in a sealed fibreglass or similar box, vented to outside the car obviously, I think these only weigh about 15 kilos anyway, so its not particularly a massive saving in weight.

is there any restriction with regaurds to the mot as to where the battery is mounted inside the car ie can you just fit it in th boot or behind the rivers seat as long as it sucure?

They are better than lead acid batteries, Having been around batteries allot in past jobs, not automotive the dry lead acid battery is used everywhere and have a general design life of 5 to 10 year's depending on spec running all the time and keep there charge better too,

I;ve got a Red Top 25 on my Race car, Hardly used and starts up on the odd time I start it and just fitted one to the 3.0 V6 engine, But the Red Top'c come from a good company which has batteries in these fields, I have no knowledge of 'ODYSSEY' but again having delt with cheap dry cell batteries quality is allot lower.

I'd never run a lead acid battery in the car even in a sealed box now

I don't think so as long as it's secure. I have the battery in the boot of my 306 and it's never caused an mot problem. It's common in the world of ICE for them to be in all manner of places and again never heard of mot problems.

bit of an update i have been looking at a optima gel battery rts 3.7 which has alot more reserve power over a 'ODYSSEY' battery but the weight of the optima battery is

14.4kgs.

so at bit of a loose end as there seems to be no inbetween its either a 9kg battery with no reserve only 17 ah or a massive gel battery!!! someone did mention to me about a caravan battery!?

i agree with miles realy dont want a lead acid battery inside as if the box split in an accident it wouldnt be nice for the sake of a 100 quid

Do you really need to put the battery in the car, as there should be room under the bonnet with a gti6?

You're really not going to notice 5kg difference.

well i already not long ago forked out for a bosch battery but i want some of the weight further back and also have the ecu and catch tank etc mounted where the battery is so that is why i wil put it inside.

as for the weight i want it as light but usable as possible!
