Mig Welding Course In Somerset Or Nearby?

Recommended Posts

cRaig

Hey there,

As we co own a AH Sprite/midget my girlfriend is keen to learn to mig weld in order that she can help out a bit more with the projects in future (amazing, isnt she?! ;)) We have found a course in Bristol but unfortunately they count being a student as your one "conscession for the year, so instead of being 140 quid it goes up to the full price of 370, which is a bit much!

Anyone got any experiences of any decent courses around Bath, Bristol, further afield etc?

Thanks,

Craig

have you thought about just getting a welder and just praticing? it isn't to hard well not as long as you get the ampage etc set up properly or there may even be someone on here close to you that could spare a few hours to get her started ;)

Have a look at Wiltshire college (Lackham) they hold part time welding courses in the evening, i think the beginners course is around £100.

The price goes up for nvq level and above, but worth having a look, not to far from bath either.

Yeah, we have a mig, but rather than just about making do with stuff, Id really like (one of us) to be able to learn properly. My mate is pretty proficient with MIG, but for some reason he cant seem to teach it particularly well.

Thanks for the suggestion of wiltshire college, it looks quite promising, and it is fairly reasonable compared to what we have found

This website and a good welder are all you need!

If I was closer I'd have helped you start out - I'd get the mate round to setup the mig welder (the hard bit) then practise on some steel offcuts.

^ As alex says.

I could learn my whole MMA welding course using a book, only thing I won't gain is a qualification.

Is your otherhalf looking to gain a qualiifcation or improve skill?

With welding the majority is the setup of the joint. The actual welding part doesn't take long at all, unless it's a massive weld.

What welder do you have is it a 'gasless', or does it use a bottle of gas.

Gasless is dogsh!t to weld with, the flux in the wire doesn't do it's job very well and you have to hold the torch very close to the weld for the gaseous shield to work. Then you can't see the edge your fusing and it probably won't run a bead.

Gas bottle FTW

Shes just wanting to learn, although at some point she might be interested in gaining a qualification, as it would be something a bit different to put on the CV for a (female) architecture student lol.

Weve got a fairly decent welder, its a gas Clarke 151 i think. Good enough for any future welding we need to do hopefully.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll persevere with trying the welder again sometime soon, unfortunately with the amount of welding that needed doing on our sprite, I didnt want to mess around and learn then, i just wanted the welding done by my mate so we could move on. Plus I wouldnt want to learn to weld on my own car, as im pretty rubbish at it

Thanks

one very important thing you need to do with your welder, keep it dry, i.e in the house

I've got a clarke and haven't used it much at all, and it needs a service now as I left it in a cold workshop :) the liner and torch and the wire need replacing.

Get some steel plate that is the same thickness as the metal on your Sprite and have a practice with a couple of different joint setups.

Butt weld _ _

Overlap _--

Just a bit of advice, don't blast out one long weld you'll burn through the metal in no time. Try and pulse it or weld sections from either end and work towards the middle.

Might be worth checking out Bridgwater College, they do a range of evening classes in Welding.
