Saxo Vtr Engine Into 205 Gti

Recommended Posts

scotty

Hi been offered everything i need from a W reg Saxo VTR to do an engine conversion into my 1.6 GTi but not sure exactly what i will need from the Saxo i know i will need the ECU and some of the wiring im not sure what box and shafts to use and also will i need to unlock the ECU like with the GTI6.

I have looked at previous posts but cant see any for putting the Saxo VTR into the 205 GTi so any advice would be appreciated or if someone could point me in the direction of any information to do the conversion.

This will be my first conversion so wish me luck all though i do have a good mechanic that will be helping me along the way

Easily done with parts from a base model but why the hell would you want to do it in the first place????

well if you going to do it i would take everything eg box, shafts, hubs engine mountings, etc because its better to have them and not use them.

dont forget that you will have to unlock the ecu.

Only reason is it will be better on fuel than my 205 is now im only getting 40 miles to £10 at least the Saxo engine will do a bit better its ether change the engine or sell the car and i don't want to sell it.

Sounds like a lot of expense time and hassle just because your 205 is badly set up. Spend a fraction of the money and get the 205 right. On long runs at 70-80mph my standard 1600 205 returned around 40mpg on the PSOOC Euro Trip. So if driven sensibly and set up right they can be economical.

Isn't there alot more hassle to it because the Saxo engine is a TU5, whereas the 1.6 Gti is an XU5? Doesnt that throw up all sorts of engine mount issues? I've not heard of anyone going from an XU to a TU, although i suppose the reverse has happened.

Good point and exactly why i am asking to find out what is involved only thinking of it as the saxo i have been offered is very cheap and the ecu is chipped.

I will have 1 last go at setting up the original engine but i don't hold out much hope of it getting any better on fuel.

As said, much easier to fix whatever is up with your existing engine.

Assuming £1.20 a litre and that your figures/measurements are accurate, that works out as a little under 22mpg.

At the very least you should be getting 10mpg more than that unless you're constantly bumbling around town on a cold engine.

If you do a search then the basics will have been covered countless times, but basically check/replace ECU temp sensor, check/optimise ignition timing, check AFM hasn't been messed with, check throttle switch is working and set correctly, and obviously check it's not leaking fuel...
