Be3 Gearbox Identification

I have got a 1.6gti that had a 1.9 engine fitted to it,i automatically assumed it had the 1.6 box left in but now i dont think so.

car is a 1989 G plate phase 1.5 which from reading on here should have left factory with a BE1 box,this has defo got a BE3 due to clutch arm not quadrant and reverse under fifth.

 

how can i tell if it is a BE3 with the ratio from a 1.6 engine or if it was fitted with the 1.9?

Easiest way is by how many revs it is doing at say 80mph in top gear, then compare with folk on here.

I have had 2 1989 cars both have had a be3 box.

IIRC 70mph = 4000rpm in 5th on a 1.6 box and 3500rpm with a 1.9.

I've had one mid 89 built car registered on a G and it has a BE1 yours it likely to be much later in the year if it was originally a BE3.

 

 

not that it matters as apart from early 1.6's they're the same gear ratios, and as far as I know all 1.9's are the same ratios.

it is a october registered 1989 if i remember correctly.

i was recently told that be1 boxes reverse was a 'lift up' action and be3 reverse was behind 5th .
