Getting Annoyed With Myself

Recommended Posts

As said already, i'd speak to Sandy first before settling on anything.

Couldn't agree more.

And at the risk of starting an argument, and appearing to have some unjustifiable personal bias, 16 valves everyday of the week and twice on Sunday.

I simply do not see the point of sticking with 8 valves when you're in your situation. To get 160bhp out of an 8v requires some serious spend, where you can have it and then some straight out of the box with a 16 valver.

And you mention 'loving the revviness of the 8v', which doesn't indicate to me that you've experienced the difference between 8 and 16v.

Everything, almost totally exclusively is in favour of 16v, as if it were a product of physics rather than me just liking a higher number.

From the recommendations in here, the first question I would ever ask is 'what is your budget?'. If it's not much, I'd just GTI6 it. If it's more, I'd Mi16 it and protect it with a better wet/dry sump and 8v rods. If it's more I'd do the above with throttle bodies and proper management, and if it's very healthy indeed something like a K20A (Honda) or the EW12J4, which on bodies sees you with nearer 270bhp than 170bhp for not much weight difference.

Mind you, we're talking about the difference here between £500 and about £3,000!

In conclusion: if you're serious, find someone who builds, maps and races/supports race engines, e.g. Sandy, who has the diary and experience to stick with you as a business partner. If you're just 'playing' then either '6 it or keep the 8v running happy.

P.S. And I also include/rate the S16 (2.0 Mi16) along with the GTI6 engine. Good management, and really just benefits from a GTI6 inlet and decent 4-2-1 exhaust.

I'm going to throw a spanner in the works now, but, isn't there a thread somewhere which has an s16 engine with a turbo more or less just bolted on with no mods to the engine, pushing out a reliable near 400bhp? I'm sure i saw it a few months back.

Food for thought perhaps?

If you want a good 8v it might be worth contacting Daza4, I don't know for sure but I think he will be selling his 8v on carbs and it's a good one.

So that's 32 valves on a Sunday, you greedy gus!! :(

Cheers for the input Dr S, measured and useful as ever.

The budget will be enough to do what I need to do and do it well :)

I decided on keeping the 8v because I love the idea of having the "standard" engine in the car.

I think if I wanted an MI16 I'd go out and find a 405, and likewise if I wanted a GTI-6 I'd be doing a 306 up.

Unfortunately I am, at 31, nearly 32 years of age loving my 205 but have the wherewithall to make it better than it was or better than I would ever have been able to when I was younger.

For you and many others a "simple" engine conversion fits the bill and ups the power etc etc, but for me it just doesn't float my boat as much as an 8v. I'm afraid I can't tell you why!!

Perhaps down the line I'll become interested in building a 16 valver, but not before I've had my time with the 8v. B)

Ignore anything from puma as he's never (As far as I'm aware) built any good 8v engines, I even asked him the question once and never had a reply.

But getting 150+ from these is pretty easy without spending allot going to around 185 with good road manner's, anymore then it get's into a different legue.

The last one I had done with a Piper 285 cam, Ported head and large valves made 170bhp on bodies which I think is the limit of the cam more than anything else but he had this before so was just re-used.

Have you tried a 16v 205 yet?!! If you haven't then i can assure you it'll float your boat and more!

400bhp turbo on track is a recipe for disaster!

Soundsofsilence's car was pretty evil on track by the looks of it, not quite 400 but not far off.

Well I'm definately set on 8 valves going forward.

I did what could be my last track day for 2010 yesterday at the Anglesey circuit which went completely without incident, apart from nearly being wiped out by a 30 grand Exige which spun in front of me whilst doing the best part of 80mph round the first corner. I think there was more of a brown trouser moment in his car than there was in mine, but still, it focussed the mind a bit more!!

The day was attended mainly by hairdressers in Elises and Exiges, turns out the North West Lotus Owners Gruop had tried to book the whole track day with Lotus's, but couldn't make up the numbers so it was thrown open to everyone else.

I think there were the best part of 40 Loti (plural of Lotus??!!) and only 8 or so other types of car. One which interested me greatly was another 205 with LAD MOTORSPORT plastered all over it, which I could have sworn I'd seen somewhere before.

As it turns out the guy who owns it now bought it from a guy in Dundee, then the penny dropped and I realised I'd seen a huge thread on it on here, but I can't for the life of me find the thread now!

The guy who owns it now reckons it had 145 bhp at the wheels which seemed optomistic to me, so I went out and had a play with him on track and it turns out that it must have slightly more than my standard engine as he had the legs on me, (only just!) down the "straight", but he braked too early into every corner and it didn't want to go round the corners as quickly as mine. Before the end of the day he had worn the outer edge of his n/s front tyre to the wires and had to make a change to trundle home on.

Having had a laugh and a joke in the pits about each other cars I'm so pleased I've gone the route I have with mine. I've made it outhandle much more expensive machinery and will now embark on adding more power with the 8v mods.

To their credit the standard of driving of everyone involved yesterday was excellent, but then most of the guys were tootling round in their pride and joy, and I wouldn't be too keen to back 30k's worth of Lotus into a tyre wall!!

In also took out a young lad who had turned up with his mate in a 200hp Clio, I did about 15 laps with him and he got out white as a sheet and said thanks, that was so much better and faster than my mates car. Again it's 4.5k vs 16 - 18k!!

I'll admit to being rather smug on the drive home!! ;)

Anyhow, plans are coming on with the 8v, I might have sourced a nicely built base for the project which means I can keep my current engine as is for the time being.

Thanks for all your help guys, I'll probably start a thread or continue the Bigtimmy track hack thread as I progress.

LAD engine in over 'estimated power figure' shocker! ;)

Sounds like a good day was had though.
