Replacing Nuts And Bolts

While changing and repairing i like to change nuts and bolts that are very rusty or where Nylocs are well worn. Is it best to get these from Peugeot where still available or could i buy nuts at least from an engineering company? If i buy alternatives from an engineering company is it best to look for a certain kind in terms of finish? For example avoid chrome ones as they rust quicker etc?

It is certainly cheaper to buy from a fastener supplier, however you will find that Peugeot are keen on using strange sizes and fine pitches, so make sure you get equivalents.

 

Stainless bolts are nice for non-stressed/structural requirements, but should NEVER be used in load bearing or safety areas, as they inherently have lower tensile strength, and are more brittle.

 

Plated bolts are the ones to ask for, these will usually be clear passivate from a fastener supplier, as opposed to yellow passivate as supplied by Peugeot. No difference apart from what they look like, depends how OE you want it to look.

A thread pitch gauge is very cheap and very handy :)

 

Most people probably wouldnt but.... Avoid B&Q's nuts and bolts, they are very low quality (plating in particular is rubbish).

 

I personally use aftermarket for most things, but only OE on mechanical (or known suitable strength equivlent - other marques/Uprated)

 

Pretty much as Tom has said really, dunno why I bothered typing this :D

I went and bought a whole selection of nuts and bolts from Screwfix to replace all mine, it's a bit strange moving from the funky Peugeot hex sizes to proper industry standards i.e. 16mm and 18mm sockets are out the window. :D

 

Some of the Screwfix ones aren't particularly good quality though, they've corroded pretty quickly, but then they were VERY cheap!

you'll find that the 16 and 18mm heads are to signify the finer threads, but then to retain consistency they used 16mm on the standard thread stuff too :D
