Starter Motor Removal

Recommended Posts

Morning all

today (and probably the rest of the week) is when i make large amounts of effort to sort out loadsa niggles with the car

Trying to replace the starter motor, and see its held in with large (torque screws i think). But one is obstructed by the clutch arm, it seems easy enough to remove, but i dont know if theres anything important on the other end as it were, so with your experience whats the best way/proper way of carrying this job out?

also, due to the fact im down and in the area, replacing the clutch cable a worth while job or stay well away?

Cheers John

PS also cracking on with the SAD, AFM retrack and ECU temp sensor, if someone has a part number for a 89 1.9 8 valve that would be awsome. I think its 024246?

The starter bolts are cap hex heads, so allen keys will remove them. A 8mm allen key will fit the head of the bolt without interfering with the clutch arm. Allied to the fact that the clutch arm is an absolute swine to remove, so leave it alone if possible!

... unless it's a BE1 (which most '89 GTi's were) then the clutch "arm" (quadrant) does need to be removed to get to the last starter bolt, but removing a BE1 quadrant isn't an issue.
