Any R5 Gtt Owners?

Recommended Posts

pugit666

Is there any R5 owners? I was just wondering where I can find information on them like you can here for the 205. My searching hasn't been fruitful and I've come to realise what a cool forum this is. Also looking for a good place to buy service parts. thanks in advance

Hi,

I have had 3 R5 GT Turbos and still have a H reg Tugsten Grey R5 GTT (64,000 miles) i rebuilt from the ground up, it only comes out on extremely nice days or when i take it to shows,

Dont hesitate to contact me with any questions regarding them as i know how much they can really get on your nerves with random problems :( and misterious breakdowns.... :)

Regarding information on them you can join www.rtoc.org but you have to pay for membership, i never had an issue with paying the fee as u benefit from the excellent members knowledge and you get lots of club discounts off parts whether it be new /recon parts or racing/fast road/aftermarket parts...

You can join www.renault5gtturbo.com you can join this website for free and again they have good information regarding the cars and knowledgable members aswell as a lot of information regaerding parts...

I also use www.cgbmotorsport.net who are Renault 5 Turbo specialists and they break many R5's and can get you ANY part you need whether it be new, re-con or used parts...

Regarding tuners and aftermarket suppliers of parts it's best to go with proven specialists, eg: KTEC Racing and GT Tuning are the best in the business and have been around for many years and have dealt with many R5 GTT's and many of the R5's left today have been to one of these specialists in there past..

I have dealt with KTEC Racing and have found them extremely useful and they always have a friendly mechanic available to talk to you regarding any issues you have, the main reason i use them is to put on there rolling road and set the carb up for correct fuelling...

The best place to get new parts is:

1. Your local renault dealer

2. GSF (German,Swedish,French car parts)

3. Euro Car Parts

4. Camberley Motor Factors

5. cgbmotorsport, who do every item available for Renault 5 GT Turbos

6. And obviously try ebay

I hope this is of some assistance ?

Again dont hesitate to contact me if you have any problems or in need of any answers ?

Barry

You should love the little car ! I absolutely love my r5 ! It's such a blast to drive and you just cant beat them for absolute mind blowing 0-60 times. I have mine set up at 1 bar boost with uprated parts but overall its standard except for a scorpion exhaust and lowered 40mm all round....

I've been to many shows and seen some absolute john'd up r5's and found out you can up-rate everything and end up spending a fortune on them, but it depends on what you want to use it for ..... As i use mine when weathers nice and too shows i like'd to keep it as standard as possible...

Only 1 thing ill tell you NEVER EVER do is put an adjustable boost valve in the car !!!! as there carb'd they can be only set at 1 boost setting and if you adjust the boost the fueling mixture (rich/lean) goes all over the place and you'll end up doing headgaskets everytime you whind that boost up !!!

Any problems you have i should be able to help you sort out or point you in the direction of someone who can.....

Look forward to hearing some of your niggly problems and helping out.....

I'm starting to love it all ready haha. my plan is to keep it almost standard apart from exhaust and lowered. My first problem is the clutch, not sure if its worn out or if the self adjusting system is worn out.

What is the problem with the clutch ? Does it bite high ? Stiff ? Or when you drive it the clutch slips ?

Best bet is to buy a clutch cable and give that a go as it is a cheap and simple job to change and hopefully an easy fix compared to doing a clutch !

The clutch is one of the major issues you get with the R5's, the main issue is if the clutch is on its way out you either need to remove the engine to re-fit the clutch or you can do it with the engine in situ but it's not easy AT ALL !

when I brought the car home, the bite was right at the end of the pedal and when the car got hot it was hard to get a gear. I removed the plastic thing off the back off the clutch pedal which brought the bite up a bit but its still quite low

What you want to do is warm up the car and try to put it into reverse, if it crunches like hell then its new clutch time(Not cheap if you want someone else to do it properly with the engine being dropped out £500 approx).

Found out it can be done for £250 with just dropping the gearbox out but getting correct alignment is almost imposible so chances are you'll have to replace it again soon.

I do all the work on my own r5 as it saves alot of money !!!

Regarding a low pedal im not too sure as the last time my r5 needed a clutch the biting point was right at the top of the pedals movement but may have just been my r5.

Remembered one thing i got told when buying my first R5 GTT : Having a deep pocket comes in very handy. If something goes wrong with a 5 Turbo try to fix it as soon as possible because before you know it you'll have another problem then you'll find it hard to get back on top of them.

But the bottom line is treat them like a baby as they are very temperamental cars indeed !!!! lol !!!!

It's a pitty your so far away as i could tell you straight away if i could go for a ride in it !

Yes its a shame you're so far away, I don't know of another R5 in York. I'm going to buy a haynes ASAP and start learning. As for reverse. it did crunch until I took that plastic clip off the pedal, it goes in easy now. Think I'll probably need a clutch . Is it best just to get an OE one or some kind of uprated job?

I noticed someone mention Ktec, they sell Carbone Lorraine brake pads which are just staggering when it comes to braking. I'm sure they can get you a R5 set, well worth a try.

Was having a word with afew people on RTOC and waitin to hear if anybody is near you......

Clutch wise i went for the volvo clutch as there better if you want to up the boost ! And last a little longer than OE will try to find the part number for you...

Mainly it depends on your driving style .... if your gonna do grand-prix starts id go for a uprated clutch with a soft release clutch pedal kit but otherwise a OE clutch is fine to run a standard set-up...

when you say about the £250 job why wont it last long ?

I say it wont last long because what ive been told is due to only having enough room to put the clutch in and use a spanner to do the bolts up, you havent got enough room to use a clutch allignment tool,

I have said before i've never tried this i always drop the whole subframe out as i have immaculate paintwork and to prevent any incidents and you have plenty of room for all nessecary jobs !

A clutch alignment tool is only used to set the plate central enough for the g/box input shaft to slide though the drive plate. The first time you press the pedal with the job finished the plate will then run on the input shaft and thus be centralised anyway.

Beat me to it.Might be worth gettin your self an old knackerd box and chopping the input shaft off.Should be abit shorter than an alignment tool
