Green Relay Under The Bonnet

Recommended Posts

joe1joe

just a quick question! a few years ago i moved the green relay under the bonnet mounted to the scutle panel/bulkhead to a neater location (making engine bay look neat) and extended all the wires so dont have any wire codes so i can refer to the manual and the battery is disconected! so cutting the story short what does the relay operate? as the relay holder is corroded

cheers

It is the headlight dim-dip relay. When you switch on your side lights the dipped beam lamps come on at about 10% brightness. It is so you dont drive about on side lights alone.

Its not tested at MOT time and modern cars dont have the dim-dip system.

indeed, they have daytime running lights which are even brighter, I'd leave it on tbh.

Me too, I'd like it if my 306 had the dim/dip system fitted instead of just sidelights. :)

Hmm, dunno.

Haynes says the 306 does have (but doesn't clarify on phase) but if it has its not as good as in the 205 anyway.

None of the above, will be either the Horn or Spot lights, the dim dip is a resistor module like the Rad fan

Spot light relay has allways been on the fuse board above glove box.

In the engine compartment on the bulkhead near the header tank there will be one green relay if its a 1.6 gti and is for the dim-dip system in conjunction with the large resistor, or two green relays if its a 1.9 gti, one for dim-dip and the other for the horn.

The dim-dip wiring is shown in the haynes manual. Item 27 dim-dip relay, item 28 dim-dip resistor.
