Classic Policies And The Rules Regarding "garaged"

Recommended Posts

GLPoomobile

I know that most (if not all) classic policies require that the insured car be a 2nd car, and that it be garaged (amongst other rules).

I'm getting closer to the point of making my 205 a 2nd car, but I don't quite fit the requirements of "garaged" status yet, I think :) We have a communcal underground car park, which is secure entry (full length electronic gate accessed via a plipper). Only residents can access it.

I'm not after educated guesses on this matter (I can make my own :) ), but I'd really like to hear from anyone else who has either been in the same circumstances, or knows for a fact if this will/will not be satisfactory for a calssic policy.

Obviously it would be best to get it straight from the horses mouth, but that would mean spending a day calling around all the insurers until I either draw a blank or find one willing to cover me. I'd rather save that effort to later depending on the information that comes out of this topic.

Thanks

My 205 is garaged. If anything were to happen I think it would only be on the very rare occasion I was cleaning the garage out. ^_^

Hi Steve

How's it going post-move?

My Caterham is insured on a classic policy. Although the Caterham is garaged when I'm not using it I do keep it on the drive overnight sometimes, so it's listed as driveway-stored on the policy. Wasn't an issue.

Why don't you just call up Adrian Flux or similar and explain the specifics of your carpark - I would have thought a secure storage like you mention would be adequate for classic cover if my driveway is.

Maybe I was being a bit too subtle.. What I mean is I simply lied to my insurance company.

Yes, too subtle Cam ^_^

Ian, everything is great up here. Love the new flat, love the peace and quiet, fresh air, decent bus service. Don't miss London AT ALL! Sorry I didn't get a chance to meet up and say goodbye though -_-

Laura's been on my back again about the 205 never working when we need it. I've got bored of waiting for a 850 T5 to come up. There were loads around a while back and now it's all gone quiet. So I think I'm just going to try and get anything I can get my hands on for £1k or less, that's local, tidy and reliable. Then I'll start working on fixing the 205 niggles, which I should be more inclined to do now I have a workspace (of sorts). I've been having naughty thoughts about long term plans for a Honda K20A conversion, but we'll get through this winter and see how things are going before I get too obsessed with that idea :)

As said, you don't normally have to have a "classic" garaged, but it will potentially reduce the premium doing so.

Many insurers will have some kind of option for secure gated parking as well Steve - something along those lines was what HIC always used to put my parking situation at work down as on both my normal and classic policies I had with them at the time, with home being as parked on the driveway.

Fresh air? Bus service? Feck me - you've turned into a pensioner... ^_^

Goes without saying but if you ever need a place to stay if you're down here, just ask.

I told Flux my 205 was left on drive overnight. Limited mileage policy with 2 drivers, £198pa. No big problems.

That's not the same as a "classic" policy though, although still a good price -_-

I'm very interested in your comment though. Can you tell me who the underwriter on that policy is please? I'm also on a limited mileage FC policy with Flux, and when I recently moved here they gave me a crap excuse when my policy price didn't change (just reminded myself - I never got around to PMing Dan@Flux ^_^ ). They said that the underwriter had already given me the lowest price they did, and couldn't come any lower even though I;m now in a lower risk area and parked off street. If you've got the same underwriter, then that proves they are talking balls, as my policy is circa £300.

I'm with equity red star on a classic policy and the car is insured as being kept on the driveway. No need for a garage although it would reduce the premium. It did cost £270 but I've a crap accident record at the moment with 4 accidents (2 fault, 2 no fault) in the last 3 years.

Classic policies are usually 30+, 2nd car garaged, limited miles, agreed value (via a club official), fully comp, club track cover, european breakdown. Granted that some may be different, but mine is under £200 for all of that with RH and I live 3 miles from the centre of Sheffield.

You really can only get the answr by talking to teh company who is likely to insure you.

I say this as in teh past I've had 2 policies that specify that the car MUST be in the garage if within 300yards (or something) of the house. And if it isn't in the garage they won't pay out.

Now I'm sure I may have been able to use the Cameron argument of 'cleaning out the garage', but to be frank when insurance companies will be coming from the starting point of not wanting to pay out I personally would not like to leave the door open even a crack for them not to.

So - sorry can't answer your question - but what I'm getting at is I think the only answer you can trust can only come from your insurer.

Valid point there Giles, and like you, I don't like to give insurers any opportunity to slip one up the bum.

I've got the answer I was looking for, which is that you can get classic policies that don't strictly enforce a "must be garaged" rule, so it's something I will follow up and make some calls when the time comes. I'll probably just keep my Flux policy for whatever car I buy as daily drive, and then look to some of the other specialists mentioned, such as Footman James, for a classic policy on the 205.

Only thing that I found annoying was that although I was able to get good classic insurance, by not garaging the car they would not allow the agreed value that they had already agreed to! :) Still, it's only £200 f.comp so can't complain.

I don't like insurance companies much either so i don't ever give them a reason to not be able to pay a claim. The only way to ever be sure about these things is to ask your actual insurer what their definition of "garaged" is. Infact all you need to do is disclose to them what your situation actually is and they can decide what to do with your premium. If anything then happens, you have disclosed the facts and they have to pay out. Saying a car is garaged and then not having a garage at all or not what they consider to be a garage is giving them an opportunity to not pay out.

I have a classic policy on my 205, it is garaged however mine is in a unit 3 miles away, all they wanted was the postcode and to know whether it was securely locked etc (which it well and truly is), best thing was it didn't change the premium at all, and mine is a shade over a £100 with Carole Nash.

however I have to add that it is a severly limited mileage policy (3k I think) as its for to and from track days only really.

Yep, I realise it'll be limited mileage and no NCB earned etc. This would have been the first year that I'd exceed 3000 miles, due to a few trips back and forth twixt London and Edinburgh, but if I park it up now to work on it over the winter, it probably won't exceed 3000 after all. The MOT is due in a few weeks and I'm not sure I've got time to sort out the niggles prior to that. If I can, I'll MOT it for convenience, but otherwise (and if I can get another car before that) I'll not bother and I'll SORN it at the end of Oct. Then I just need a basic, cheap policy to cover it whilst it's parked up, and I'll start working through the list of problems.

So that's Carole Nash and Footman James to try. I'll do a search through the thousands of previous insurance topics to see ho else I need to call.

try heritage insurance too mate. mine is with them and i pay 175 f/comp with a guarenteed value (on supplying pictures) on my vts engined pug.

it must be garaged over night and the garage must be within 600m of my house (which i think it is just).with a 1500mile p/year limit (but was advised that if i get close to that ring them up and i can extend it)

tbh i havent read the small print entirely but they were a very helpfull bunch not like most std insurers.
