Rear Beam Change 205 Gti

Recommended Posts

Recently decided to change my rear beam as the bearings had collapsed and it soon turned into more work than we thought.

Old beam not looking to good

Found some rust so decided to sort it out with the beam off

Time for painting we used 2 coats of silver hammerite.

With the rust sorted and painting finished it was time to fit the replacement beam.

When testing the new beam we noticed play in the bearings on one side so it was rebuild time and to make thing easier we made this bearing puller.

Puller doing its job and makes work a lot easier.

No damage to the beam tube was a good sign.

Forgot to take a photo of the beam finished but main thing the car is back on the road again.

Also replaced the brake pipes while we had the beam off and i have to say the job was not as bad as i thought it was going to be not that i want to do it again in a hurry.

Car is going back off the road again next weak for new clutch and front brake upgrade.

i hope you have used something else on top of your hammerite as its really a bad idea to use it on the car.the reason being is that it chips very easy then the water gets in and rust comes back.

ps

nice car

good work there, I like the puller, its just like the one in the haynes manual IIRC.

I'd be tempted to drop the fuel tank as well whilst you're in the mood for rust treatment!

We only used hammerite for now just to tidy it up i am trying to find winter storage so we can strip the car and do it right with better rust treatment and the tank will be coming off at the same time :D
