Gti6 Oil Pressure Problems

Recommended Posts

stef205

hi, ive just put a gti6 lump into my 205 and i renewed the oil pump spring in the oil pump. Now i am not getting any oil pressure i have spun the engine over on the starter with the plugs out to ease it. I installed the pump as i removed it and all went back together fine. I did put some oil in the pump before i bolted it back into the engine. There is no oil in the filter and the oil is on the max on the dipstick can someone please help me out? thanks

Is your bottom pulley on tight? The gear that drives the pump is clamped onto the crank by the pulley. Loose pulley = no drive to pump.

yes it is tight i will double check, i have tired back feeding some oil down through the oil filter hole and filled the oil filter half way and put it on and spun it over but still no pressure and it emptyed the filter

put the old spring in ? is it a different strength spring?

it was a grp A oil pump spring but when i removed the old spring it looked the same but a tad short i asume this is from wear?, the engine its self has only done 69k

"gp A"

i.e the same £1.50 spring as you took out, but you probably paid a tenner for it.

How long have you cranked it over for? It can take a good few seconds of cranking/running before it will get oil pressure when you've had the oil pump out.

yeah ive bin cranking it over for a few mins and theres no pressure, i checked in the oil filter to see if there was oil in there just in case my gauge was up the creek

Keep trying, it can take quite a bit of doing sometimes.

that's because its the same spring, these also have hydraulic tappets, 16 of course, so takes a fair bit of oil to fill them up.

Strange I did this at the weekend and it did start straight away and give me more oil pressure. Its true people do sell them for a few more quid than just going to main dealer and getting a 306 gti6 spring But its in now and does keep the pressure up a bit more. Did you see the pressure relief valve when you put the spring in? did the spring seat ok I have heard the pressure relief valve can get stuck but has never happened to me. if it was pumping fine before fitting the spring? it must be something to do with that.

good luck

Was reading a build up the other day of an rb26 in a e30 bmw, amazing car, anyway upon trying to start the engine for the first time he encontered the same problem, the oil pump was cavitating (sp?) Air and would not allow oil through the pump. His solution was to remove the oil pressure switch and somehow plumb in a vacume cleaner to the gallery in the block to pull the air out whilst cranking, worked for him on the rb, but tbh I've never seen this issue in an XU myself so not sure if its applicable

My friend said it could be a air lock of some kind, as i said before i have back fed some oil into the oil filter housing and have left the filter off over night to see if it draws it out.

The ball bearing didnt drop out when you changed the spring did it? I've never done one on an xu engine but I guess they're all the same set up?

well i tried again cranking etc and still nothing. So I went a head and removed the pump again and after a close look I noticed that the strainer had oil coming out of it, but no oil on the outlet of the pump. Now I presume the problem could now be the relief valve? Can someone give me advise on removing the relief valve?

just butting in here rather than opening a new thread, ive just bought a 205 gti6.

problem is the oil presure is not great when idiling.

it was sat for a long time before i bought it and ive done a full sevice, could this problem be down to the engine needing a new oil pump spring?
