Who Is Happy With A Standard Backbox?

Recommended Posts

JRL

I have owned 4 205 gti's and all have had Performance exhaust and now would like to try a standard back box for my mi16. I currently have a stainless steel system but bored of its drone.

I found this: but unlike the poster I would like to know can you switch just the backbox instead of the whole system for 16v's? I have taken it to my local exhaust centre and they put me off the idea because they told me I would lose too much power?

any thoughts or experiences i would love to hear about them.

thanks

Really depends what system you've got on there - some you can swap the backbox for a standard one, some you can't.

Another one here that will be putting a standard backbox back on at some point in the near future btw

The standard Peugeot system was pretty good, though most of it was in the manifold. The drone you get is due to a combination of wide tail pipe but more so the resonance properties of stainless over mild steel. My 205 is pretty quiet with a Magnex onbut it does have a centre box, a cat and a turbo to get in the way on the way out.

Yes Bring back the pea shooter exhausts! neat autos do the nice shiny Bosal back box for I think around £40 im going to use VHT lacquer over it to keep it shiny. My gf's 106 quicksilver came with a massive ugly big bore exhaust and it fell off in the middle of the rd and I got out to retrieve it and a big double decker bus ran straight over it flattened it. why do people fit these monstrosities?

I believe I have a standard front down pipe (looked like mild steel) and the rest Magnex.

I'm running a Maniflow 4-2-1 with a standard 2 piece exhaust. Previously I had centre and rear magnex sections, great for dropping a couple of gears in tunnels but gave the game away at the 'lights'. With the standard 'look' it's still pretty noisy (not as 'ringy' in sound) but looks standard which it isn't. I had a custom piece made up to join the two up, cost about £80. There's a picture of it in my reshell photos.

Im in the market for a smallish bore and tip magnex, nothing over 2.5" :D

Got an old standard system, sleeve fitment onto downpipe if anyone really wants to do a deal, dont want much as its had a bit of welding

Standard backboxes are the only restrictive part of the systems, hence it depends what you really want out of it and probably doesn't make much difference at all anyway.

I run a standard one on my 1.6 and really don't mind it, in fact i like it, but given most of the baffles are now probably gone!

Well I need to get a back box sorted and am having problems just finding an olive type aftermarket one am just thinking of slapping on a standard back box for now, I mean performance wise what will it do 1-2bhp less? ;) I currently have a 2 in 1 downpipe on not sure what make maybe custom and rest system straight through so cant see by just putting a standard back box on will do much difference if any :)

I initailly ran my car with a PTS group N system & oe split downpipe but have since swapped it to a proper two piece system & standard backbox, much nicer in all ways & with the minimal difference in diameter (phase 2 is slightly bigger) it drives much nicer but still makes a nice noise when giving it the beans.

I've often considered a decent backbox but I also don't want a 3" + tailpipe so I've never bothered.

1-2 bhp won't make any noticable difference in how your car drives, anything under 10bhp will be very difficult pick up.

Graham.

I'd be happy with the standard backbox if only they didn't look so s*ite, why di Pug have to fit a diesel style tailpipe?

I really liked the standard item on my 306 D Turbo, same tailpipe as the 306 gti6, not big or showy just nicely chromed. I've got a 2.5" maybe 3" backbox on there at the moment, it looks OK not too boy racer but I'd prefer a 2" one really.

I've just bought one of Miles exhaust systems.

Whilst its not that large or loud I still prefer standard and will therefore being putting the original back on I think. I'm just concerned with loss in power.
