even if i get an advisory, i make sure that all jobs are done

i used to work for a nationwide distrubution company, and i serviced the trucks. even on a service, the truck left the garage with no faults, and as if it had just been prepped for a m.o.t

since then, and this is even when working on other peoples cars, i will always make sure the vehicle is in excellent condition

the garage i take cars to for m.o.t, have often commented on how impressed they are with my workmanship

I think it does go on more than we dare to think. I have taken cars before now for a new MOT at a different place and it pass on stuff that it failed on the first time. Some of it is even open to interpretation too. There seems to be a culture of failing though rather than passing. If they have an inspection and your car passed when it should fail they can lose their license to MOT, if they fail it unecessarily then i doubt if the same is true as they could argue they were just being cautious and putting your safety first.

The whole system is flawed anyway IMO.

I must be lucky, never had an advisory or failure that wasn't warranted.

As Jord294 said, its always worth working through the advisories before they escalate even if its something small.

Yes they do, particularly if it's a Kwik-Fit type centre.

Worth remembering that if the car lives outside exposed to the elements, not using it doesn't do it any favours and things like brake disks will be rusted up and potentially fail an MOT if they've not cleaned themselves up on the way to the MOT station. Just because it's only done 200 miles in a year since the last MOT doesn't mean that everything is exactly as it was.

I think the thing is to find a garage that you trust, if you aren't happy with that comment then dont take it back to them. There are plenty of mot stations to choose from.

The guy I use is totally fair, he gets very little work out of me but all the points he makes seem to be fair one so I carry on using him. If you dont trust this company then try another, there must be outfits in the market that do have the 'lets fleece them' policy so just find one whos attitude suits you.

Or use a government MOT test centre, where they do not do repairs, therefore have no incentive to fail you at all.

I've used the same garage for the last few years and the guys are spot on. They don't need extra work through MOT failures as they are always busy. But prior to that I took a previous 205 to a garage in Hatfield, and I felt that they failed it on some dubious points for the sake of trying to get some work.

I can't remember the list but the 2 that stick in my mind are:

Insecure front seats - It was the usual subframe wobble. Perhaps a fair fail, but we all know they do it, it's a "feature" ( ;) ). But what annoyed me was that I swapped the subframes and they were no better than before, but they passed it on the retest.

Wipers not clearing the screen - bollocks. This is what wound me up the most. The blades were in good condition and I'd thoroughly cleaned them and the screen. But what made it worse was that I'd driven from central London to Hatfield that morning when I dropped it off, and it was raining, so I had the wipers on the whole way and they worked without a hint of smear

But here's the bit that finally convinced me that they were screwing for work. Upon picking up the car from the retest, I was sat there in the waiting room and a woman came in to pick her car up, and I heard the guy tell her it had failed because the wipers were smearing the screen. Coincidence maybe? Hmmmmmmm

Now I've got to find a new place for an impending MOT as I've moved

It is just a case of finding youself a fair tester, some are better than others. The guy I use is not only fair, but will pass a vehicle I take if it is something daft like a numberplate lamp not working as he knows I will sort it. Anything dangerous is a straight fail no argument. I take on average about 20 vehicles a year so it pays me to have a good relationship, and vice versa I'm a good customer to them.

My place has two testers. The young "new" guy who will fail a fail and look for a fail! And the older guy who will look for a pass in a fail, even if it means passing a socket set and leaving me to fix it.

Last time I went in for a retest, I said as a joke to the young lad in the front office "I knew I should have asked if the older guy was doing the tests", he replied "so many people say that!"

Maybe you should have asked him if he'd had his cataracts checked recently. :-)
