Mot Fail

Recommended Posts

The main thing it failed on today was ' Nearside front lower suspension arm has excessive play in a ball joint'.

Does this mean I have to replace the whole wishbone?

Yes, you cannot do anything with the balljoint as it is integral with the lower arm.

If the balljoint has failed then you need a whole new wishbone. Sometimes the hole the balljoint pin goes into in the hub ovals so that could need changing too.

Mine failed on that as I didn't do up the bolt enough :(

Me too. Although I think my torque wrench is to blame :( Luckily the friendly tester noticed what was wrong and torqued it up there and then :)

Gsf just quoted me 21.15 including the vat, does that seem right, sounds cheap to me

Sounds very cheap, I would guess they have quoted you for a 309 base model track control arm and not the 309 GTI lower wishbone, as these are something like £65.

I'd get a new nut + bolt for the clamp whilst you're fitting new bits, 23lbft iirc.

Interestingly the Haynes quotes a torque figure of +5Nm for the automatic 205, even with the same upright/wishbone etc.

I've started doing this on my own cars.

Ok, ive tken the 3 bolts off and now its just dangling by the ball joint.

Is there a special tool I need to get this off or just a bit of bruit force? Then thinking ahead is there a special knack to putting it back on?

You'll need a ball joint spliter, either:

This ak381.jpgor this ball%20joint%20splitting%20wedge.jpg

but there more use for TREs so you should be able to leaver the wishbone down out of the hub with a long enough leaver.

I'd never go near a 205 with any of the tools pictured, just a breaker bar over the wishbone and under the track rod and push down.

With a knackered wishbone coming off, undo the bolts, then free it from the subframe and and spin it round towards you. Then you can hold the bush area with one end, whilst you twat the end nearer the balljoint to get it down out of the pinch in the hub.

Well 9 out of the 10 fails have been sorted today, thats not like me at all!! This would have normally taken me a month to do, and I most probably would have finished it all if the wishbone from gsf and bolts from Peugeot were in stock, which were almost 20 quid by the way :-S. Thanks for that expensive idea welshpug :-P

Robbing gits, take them back. My factor does the proper spec clamp bolt in a little pack for about £3 each.

Well as I was on the phone to peugeot I thought i'd get all three, who knows when they were done last. It was the first time they asked to take payment upfront as they were a 'special delivery' which which should take 2 days to get to them! Why am I starting to feel that i've been done now?

Thanks for that miles, although its almost too late. Where would you reconmend me ordering from?

I'm looking into getting some affordable 309 wishbones for my 205 project, has anyone had any experience using wishbones made by a company called Pearl or by a company called Quinten Hazel?

It's difficult to get any now, I had to use some First Line ones which seem OK, Not great but better than the Cheap'o' ones, but it's catch 22 no one that I;ve found does good quality ones now so it's just a case of frequent replacement

pearl stuff is crap. Quinton hazell stuff is usually pretty good, so use that out of the choices.
