To keep the gti6 ecu from locking itself, do you just unplug while the engine is running?

Switch ignition on, wait for the immobiliser light to go out, and then unplug ECU with the ignition still on.

 

You don't have to have the engine running to do it, but certainly it works just fine if you do.
