Wrong Fuel Filter ?

Recommended Posts

lemmingzappa

I ordered a new fuel filter from ECP a while back for my 1.6 GTi and I decided to fit it today. The problem is it's completely different to the one on the car and about half the size ?

The ECP part number is 503 44 0530

And the Bosch number on the side of the filter is 0 450 905 002

Looks like a 106 fuel filter. Was the box open when you recieved it? Maybe someone swapped them round?

Yep. 106 filter.

Does the job fine. Used on all of my 16v engines. Removes the need for banjos etc and allows you to relocate the filter to a decent position such as where the jack normally is.

I'd keep it, unless you wanted to stay OE or don't have the time to make a bracket and change the hose ends etc.

I guess I don't mind using it but I wouldn't know what else to get ?

Do you need to upsize the ends of both hoses ? I take it the original bracket is too large to hold it steady ?

I'm pretty sure it was sealed when I got it, it actually says 'POLO MK4 FUEL FILTER'. But the part number is correct according to the ECP website.

I'd just fit new rubber FI lines from the solids on the bulkhead to position a coil-sized bracket to house the slimmer filter in a better location than the OE filter, which tends to get in the way of the master cylinder and cam cover.

It's quite an easy mod, but once done I think you'll be pleased.

Again though, it's not OE and some people frown upon that.

Ah I see, so there's two static take off points on the bulkhead ? Any idea what sized lines I will need to use the new filter ?

I'm trying to think of places other than where the jack is as I still keep mine there.

I think i've sussed out what I'm going to do.

Can anyone confirm that the size of the fuel line either side of the OE filter is 6mm ID ?

And does anyone know what size bolt fits in the jack mounting spot ?

The original hoses are 7mm iirc, but due to the way they work (plastic liner that's shrunk over the fittings) you need 8mm to replace it.

Buy the original filter. It will fit on the original bracket, in the original location, with the original pipes.

Why make things difficult?

Does that mean I couldn't run a joiner inbetween the end of the original hose and a new piece of hose ? (due to the shrinking)

Quoted for the truth.

The original filter is not in a difficult location.

The original hoses are sort of awkward. They're a weird size, and the feed pipe from the tank has a screw connection to the rubber where it enters the engine way.

Personally I'd be included to agree with Tom and say get the correct filter, unless you'd replacing the whole lot at the same time.
