jord294 94 Posted September 10, 2010 i've been offered a k plate 205 gti 1.9 which i'm going to view tomorrow. i believe it's the 1905 cc CAT 122 hp /90 kW XU9JAZ/DKZ engine if i buy it, i plan on fitting a brand new mi16 engine with 405 loom and 2 row ecu anyway. it's going to be a project car just wondered where i stand on the 'cat' issue is there anything electrical/management side i need to be aware of before i do the conversion thanks in advance
S33GAV 0 Posted September 10, 2010 I was told it goes against the Engine, so the mi16 engine is a non cat, so that's what it should be MOT'd as. I have a K reg myself with a mi16 engine, and even though the original engine wasn't a CAT one, the bloody MOT tester wouldn't listen to what I said and basically tested it as a CAT model anyway! He did say that there were a couple of different ways to test it, and that it would pass anyway, which it did, but I was annoyed he wouldn't listen to me about it not being a CAT engine. hcmini1989 16 Posted September 10, 2010 (edited) right aparnty you`ll need to prove the age of the engine to get it tested as a non cat .So maybe get your self some bullsh*t reciept for the engine make it up on work or something or keep the logbook for your engine .Or if its a brand new engine you should be provided with a reciept maybe saying fitted in 405 between 86-92 or what ever it was Edited September 10, 2010 by hcmini1989
Anthony 1,003 Posted September 10, 2010 Remember that many of the K reg cars, even if fitted with a CAT, don't actually need to be - it's all related to the manufacturing date.
GTI6BOY 29 Posted September 10, 2010 Its a k plate...does not need a cat
Daviewonder 533 3 Cars Posted September 10, 2010 Its a k plate...does not need a cat 93 K plate cars do.
welshpug 1,666 Posted September 11, 2010 92 K plate do need to retain the cat, if they had a cat from the factory it has to stay, unless a non cat engine is fitted.
Anthony 1,003 Posted September 11, 2010 As I said earlier, it's not that simple - there are K-reg CAT cars that were manufacturered prior to the cut off date and thus do not need a CAT for the MOT.
Alastairh 47 Posted September 11, 2010 I wouldn't worry about it. My K-93 205 went through a couple of MOT's with GTI6 engines and 1.9 8v's which originally had a cat. I managed to wangle it providing the emissions were within the requirements. Al
Miles 331 1 Cars Posted September 11, 2010 You can go by the Chassis Number, Most pre-date the Reg letter so the Number plate makes no odds at all

jord294 94 Posted September 12, 2010 thanks for the input guys i've viewed the car, and it does have a cat fitted, but the owner reckons the insides have been taken out it's not the best looking of cars, and the main fault with the car, is a bizarre alarm system set up i've made an offer, so will see what happens
