Removing Driveshafts

I have read loads of other peoples messages on this, but someone said about splitting the drive shaft at the bearing. Do i just take the boot off and then pull it/dismantle it? Can this damage it and be a pain in the arse to rebuild?

Easier than that!

 

You just undo the two nuts on the rear engine mount, push out hockey bolts and bearing pushes out. Sometimes need a tap to get out, but no dismantling required.

Why do you want to do it that way? It's just as easy to remove the driveshaft complete, and no risk of damaging it then - undo the two 11mm nuts on the lower engine mount that hold the driveshaft bearing in place, and then knock the driveshaft out using a suitable drift as required.

 

If you do split the driveshaft at the inner joint, be VERY careful that you don't drop any of the needles out.

I don't want to split the drive shaft but i was just checking if when i next tackle it, i no other ways to tackle it. very much appreciated thanks everyone.

No worries, I'll give you a hand, but I'm tied up this and next weekend (I've got a court hearing on the 20th I'm preparing for).

 

The hard part is undoing the hub nut, drain the gearbox, pull wishbone balljoint out of hub, undo the two 11mm bolts and the driveshaft should ease out the gearbox, however, they can be stuck and need a slight tap with a drift.

Undo the 11mm bolts before you drain the oil, that way if you spill any you don't have to lay in oil. :lol:

lol gearbox oil stinks :lol: ive done everything except the to 11mm bolts so ill undo them give it and spin and a rank. Haven't got a socket big enough its a 35mm???

Alright Guys

Just read through this post and have a related problem: my 205 leaves its mark everwhere i park it. There is oil all over the back of the block and I think its coming from the gearbox to off side drive shaft and just spraying everywhere from the shaft. Is this an easy fix replacing a couple of rubber seals in the box to shaft joint?

That's the easier side to do! Changing the driveshaft seal is not hard. Jack the car up, remove the wheel. Then undo the lower wishbone bolt to remove it from the hub. Then pull the driveshaft from the box (pull closest to the box on the driveshaft as poss to avoid pulling it apart) then use a screw driver to pull the driveshaft seal out. Clean up the area which houses the seal. Then push the new seal in. Smear a small amount of gearbox oil around the new seal. Push the drive shaft in, Push the wishbone back into the hun. Put the whell back on and your done :y)

I managed to do this and I'm a complete novice when it comes to car maintainence but managed to do this with little trouble so I'm sure you will be able to!

Sorry if I have had a few spelling mistakes :unsure: had a few blackthornes at the pub tonight!

You can get decent seals from the group buy area, it's about £7.50 including postage.

 

May as well do both sides while you're at it tbh, the neaside isn't much harder to do and given you're probably going to put new oil in there it makes sense.

 

I did it as above, but removed the whole hub so there was nothing in the way, it's only a few bolts more and makes life much easier.

Offside is drivers side remember, so that's the more difficult/involved side (although not by much, admittedly) as you also need to under the intermediate driveshaft/bearing bolts and tap it out from the engine mount.

If it's not been done, it's good chance to change the bottom mount!
