Mi16 Firing On Only 2 Cylinders

Recommended Posts

I have searched the forum but can't seem to find any one who has had this problem so apologies if there is one but im getting desparate.

I have recently put an mi16 engine in my 1.6 gti using an engine that used to be in a 309 goodwood using the same link loom but changing the 6 pin connector for the 205 one, it is all piped and wired but when i start it it only runs on 1 and 4 cylinder i have done a compression test, had injectors cleaned, changed ht leads, checked for ohms at the injector connecters and these seem to be fine, when i start it it seems as if the timing is out it pops and bangs but will not run smooth the ht order is the same as autodata says and now i have run out of ideas. It could be something really simple but the engine ran fine in the 309 and all of the ancillaries were already connected when i got it.

Any help would be apprieciated.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the distributor cap is faulty. Take out the spark plugs for the cylinders that are not firing and ground them to the block and turn the engine over to see if they are sparking or not.

I have tried a spare spark plug in 2 and 3 ht leads and got a spark against the block, would this indicate the distributer cap was ok?

Was it a strong, blue, regular spark?

Take the plugs out after trying to start it to see if they are wet with fuel or not.

Try swapping HT lead 2 and 3 over in case they are the wrong way around (despite what Autodata claims!) and try swapping the injector plugs between 1 and 2, and 3 and 4 and see if the fault lies with the injector wiring.

If you've got good compression and you've got a strong spark, it can only really logically be no/incorrect fuel or spark at the wrong time

(thinking about it, also check that there's not a pool of oil/water in the spark plug wells on 2 and 3)

Thanks for the ideas i will have to try them tomorrow now though, the spark from the plugs seemed to be more of a yellow colour (should i try some new plugs?).

Yellow is a sign of a weak spark, try comparing it to the spark for the cylinders that are firing, if they are strong and blue in comparison it is almost certainly the distributor cap or arm.

just to make sure you have the correct ht order, as the auto data book is a a bit of an odd diagram.

looking from you pasinger wing,

front/top #3

rear/top #1

rear/bottom #2

front/bottom #4
