Starting Problem

Recommended Posts

I am having a bit of a starting/running issue with my 205 GTI-6 at the moment.

The past few weeks it has had what seemed like a small misfire where the car wouldn’t even rev, it would normally clear through it and run ok. On Sunday it did the same and just wouldn’t stay running and stalled. It wouldn’t restart for 5 minutes. It did this again on Monday and died within about 2 minutes of starting it. If left for a few days it will start but then die in 2 minutes and it now wont restart at all.

I have put a spark tester on each lead and the light flashes to indicate a spark, so it seems I am getting a spark. Now after dry cranking it 10 or 15 times to do the spark test, the plugs remained dry, wouldn’t you expect them to be wet with Fuel as its on Carbs?

I tried to see if the fuel pump had power, but putting the meter on either of the 2 wires into the pump to a ground point in the boot didn’t show 12v when the ignition was turned on, should there be?

Also, looking at the coil the small black/white wire shown in the picture just neatly slid out of the connector, but it didn’t seem to belong in an empty slots, anyone got an idea what’s its for?

Any ideas?

Cheers

Anyone got any ideas if that loose wire is meant to be connected up to the coil?

also, will the fuel pump be powered only when im actualy cranking the engine?
