Late/early 1.6 Heads.

Hey all,

I've read as far as i can on this forum to see that you can swap 1.6 and 1.9 heads on the later engines no problem. But i'm still stumped as to whether i'd need to source an early (105bhp) head for an early engine or whether it's possible to to put the later ones on too? Ideally i'd try and keep the car as original as possible and in that light, i'd think i'll probably have to source the earlier head/block from a pre 1988 car. The 1986, white, non sunroof 205 has a cracked head and i am looking into buying it as a wee project. But i want to know this information before i continue! ;)

Cheers,

Brian.

Does your car definately have the 105bhp engine fitted?

There are remarkably few that had tbh, the engine upgrade was from early 86 (Sporting 205's states June 86 but I'm sure it wasphased in before that).

Easy ways to see just by lifting the bonnet is if the throttle body has the breather pipe to the top or the rocker cover has the breather also iirc. (even if the car has side repeaters can be a good sign of the later engine)

Alternatively look for the engine id plate on top of the block near the upper offside engine mount. Code for the 105 bhp is 180a but if it says B6D you already have the 115bhp engine.

The later head should be a direct fit, internally the engine is the same afaik but the head & cam changed on the later ones with larger valves than originally.

It might be worth getting the later 115bhp ecu as well though imo.

Thanks for that abundance of info there Graham. I haven't actually been to see the car yet or contacted the seller, I just know of it sitting through in Glasgow somewhere needing a new home. It's an older guy that owns it and is reaching the age where he can't fettle with engines any more. He has a few lotus', range rovers and 5 205's that he'd like to get down to 2 205's. It's not advertised on the net or in papers i don't think, just WOM.

My plan is to get my 205 knowledge up before i organise a viewing as my 309 knowledge won't cover everything. My guess is that the rear beam will have seized up as it's been sitting for quite some time as well.

I will certainly be looking out for those engine codes.

No worries Brain.

This picture shows where the engine id tag should be, usually a small silver & black plate.
