Best Wiper Motor Upgrade For Slow Wipers

Recommended Posts

joni

I've got the slow wiper syndrome. It could be for a number of reasons from what i've read:

1. dirty contacts

2. bad earth / low voltage

3. old motor

4. rusty/ungreased wiper mechanism

Regardless of this I want to upgrade to the best wiper motor i can find that will give me a relatively new motor and the fastest wipers possible (to clear the screen asap when rallying). There's nothing worse than when your wipers stop working and you have to clear your windscreen with the nearest thing you can find in the dark that looks like grass (in my case nettles - ouch!).

I've seen people refer to the 306/106 and saxo wipers but which is the best or are they all the same (I know that they can have different connection plugs)? Also if people say you can fit a 106 motor for example can you fit ANY 106 motor or does it have to be from a mk1 or a certain age range? Would be good to have some definitive info here if poss as I couldn't find this when searching the forum and got a bit tied in knots. Cheers.

Xsara wiper motors certainly fit and you use them with the 205 mounting plate, links and arms - in this case the motor was from a Mk1 VTS, but I'd guess they're all the same. The wiring plug also needs swapping for a 205 style one, which I believe you don't need to do when using 106 motors (but have never tried for myself)

In terms of which motors fit, you'll have seen all the info on the various topics already. For each model range, I'd expect the motors to be exactly the same throughout the range. There is a possibility, as you've highlighted, that they may differ slightly between phases, but I'd hazard a guess that it's unlikely.

As for a definitive answer on what's best, I don't think your are going to get that here! I doubt anyone has compared or knows for a fact if any of the motors run faster gearing than any of the others. I'd simply go for the newest motor available that would fit.

the 306 motor fits perfectly (swap connector is needed). and from the service box it is much cheaper than the 205 one too.

I run a late model saxo motor, pretty sure the original plug fitted no problem

I took a motor from a early phase 1 106 diesel,

It wasn't as good as I thought it would be.

Next time im going to refurb rather than replace, at least I get the joy of shouting and swearing!

I have a 106 one fitted. Not sure what model / year it was from but it bolts straight upto the 205 mounting plate and linkage and plugs straight in  And its an improvement over the 205 one.

Had one from a T reg Saxo. Connector was the same, just needed swapping over onto the mount bracket and linkage. Good as fricking new.

I think it's more about the condition of the replacement than necessarily what car it comes from... As low mileage car as poss and in as good condition as poss. Can't go too far wrong from that. Most breakers will take stuff back if what they have sold is faulty.

Thanks all.

Cleaned/greased up existing setup last night (all linkage bearings/pivot points, connections in motor) and refitted. Its definitely better but still not good enough for me so i've ordered a saxo motor off ebay for £15 to try. Hopefully it will fit!

Just been reading this thread and I'm suffering with slow wipers too. I'm curious to know how you got on with the Saxo motor? Thanks.

what are the results with the Saxo motor?

As above myself and Veero have already tried the saxo motor. I think they are exactly the same motor just faster due to being better condition/newer

Make sure the wiper linkage is good first. I had three in the garage and all bar one were scrap. The metal pins that go through the plastic pivot mounts rot, as there is little o ring at the top under the circlip. They become pitted and even sieze! I rebuilt the good set I had, and it was a huge improvement without even touching the wiper motor.

I bought a known good one of someone on here, and stripped and refurbed it, it was already in far superior condition to my original before I got the emery on the contacts then regreased it all including linkage and resealed the motor covers. The connectors are defiantly a good start though if it isn't getting the voltage its going to be crap.

It looks like its been just over a year (with the car having VERY little use) and I have the slow wiper problem yet again. I can't say the saxo motor improved things massively but it did help a bit. I'll be taking it to bits and giving it a refurb.
