8v 1.9 Engine Blown At A Race - Mi16?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys. I need some advice.....

I have a 205 1.9 gti with weber 40 carbs and a 1.6 box and a gripper limited slip diff. I blew the engine at Silverstone at the weekend so im looking for a new block. My question is should i think about going for a Mi16? Is the power advantage worth the added weight and how much heavier is it? (atm it weighs 787kg) Will my 1.6 gearbox and the carbs work with the Mi16?

Any other info on Mi16's would be great, I know nothing about them....

Thanks in advance....

Look through some Mi16 project threads and arguments on here.

Your gearbox will work as will your carbs and it's a straight fit. The difference in weight will be negligable.

The blocks are almost identical and bore and stroke the same, so the extra weight really only comes from a larger clutch and head with more valves and an extra cam.

But, the power increase available is great value compared to what you'd have to do to an 8v to match it.

They do really well on track although you need to take certain precautions to avoid oil starvation induced issues.

Try reading up on here first and also consider throttle bodies and aftermarket management.

P.S. I have a high spec, rebuilt Mi already on bodies which has never run for sale if you're seriously interested.

are you allowed MI16's in your series?

Thanks DrSarty.

I had the car dyno'd a couple of races ago and it had 140 and the fly, and 114 at the wheels, this was giving me pretty good performance on track. What could i expect from an Mi16? If you want to PM me with details of your engine that is for sale, i could be interested....

Welshpug - i beleive so, an Mi16 is 2.0 litre isn't it? One series i race in requires that you have a maximum of 200 bhp per ton, and the other is a maximum of 2.0 litre naturally aspirared.

there are two (technically 3) Mi16's, 160 bhp 1.9 alloy block and 155 bhp 2.0 iron block.

the alloy version has a lower compression variant which is 148 bhp, but quite rare.

if you are working to 200 bhp/ton, then you'd only need 157 bhp at your current weight, tbh I'd just build another 8 valve engine as you wont need to change anything in your setup apart from tune up the carbs.

Ok thats interesting. Well its 200 bhp per ton at the wheels not at the flywheel....

that's an odd one! as each gear is different.

you'd probably need about 200 bhp @ the flywheel to get 200 bhp/ton atw roughly, are there any other 205's running?

yer i was suprised they wanted the reading fromt the wheels also....

There is another 205 gti - its 1.6 but he has more power from that then i had from my 1.9. I still beat him mind you :(

Inlet manifold will need to be changed!

you have to love the grey areas in the rules open for a bit of abuse.

Yes I know. I said 'the carbs'.

'Straight fit' meant the engine.

For clarification, 8v inlets are paired and cathedral shaped. They couldn't be more different to a Mi/S16/GTI6 head if they tried. However, the carbs themselves are suitable.
