A Capri is a nice car, though ultimately, not a very good handling car? This is a question, not a statement as i have never driven one.

I have thought E36 328 24v coupe (3 door in real life!), as the compact had a lesser E30 rear suspension setup as far as i know.

Also worried about Nickasil lining on the alloy blocks, thiugh i dont know if this affected all of the 328s?

Liquid106: Another good idea! A friend af collage had one of these years ago, every wet afternoon we would go roundabout hunting! His was a blue one with white steel wellars(wellers) And i did have a soft spot for it!

Another (slightly older!) collage friend had a Merc 190E Turbo Technics, that was brutal!

Yep, compacts got the E30 rear suspension. Might as well get the E30 in that case as they look cooler!

Do what my mates done on his MX5 Mk1, Stuck a 2.0 Mazda engine in (*Zetec based) on bodies, or a V8 of some kind.

Ripthrough, im a but wary of rotory engines, think id rather stick with a std piston engine, but i like your thinking!

LS1 fits but it won't handle as well as a renny'd one

Sounds good, don't Mazda do a 1.8 V6 in one of their models or something like that too?

i wouldn't go for a E36 i run one which at the moment is still quite standard. It can't cope with proper hard driving (track/race) 300miles 15 litres of oil. i have had 2 328 e36 and i wont be getting another.

e36 will need loads of work on the suspension to make it feel nice, lot of work equals a lot of outlay. You'll blag a cheapy only to blow a lot on tyres/suspension etc. Go e30.

masda do a 2.5 V6 that in the mx6 that quite pokie, you'll be hard pressed to spend that little and get a car that will be more fun or faster than a 205 with a gti-6 in it.

could pick up a mk2 MR2 turbo but when the back end loses grip its gone driven a few of them in the past and because of the MR set up and all the weight being over the rear wheels is more spin than slide.

i have seen one with a V8 slaped in it but a huge conversion and i bet it cost a far bit too.

only reall option i think you have is a MX5 or enos roadster(impoer version i belive) fantastic handling could do will a bit more power to bet faster than the 205 tho.

Tbh, a cheap eunos and one of the off the shelf supercharger kits would probably keep you entertained for quite a while.

Just watch the bushes are all in good nick, they wear well, but with double wishbones all around its a few hundred quid in bushes if they want replacing!

My TDS was transformed with just a Bilstein B12 kit.

E36 M3's are now only £4k for the four doors so i'm going to save up for one of those instead of a lesser model ;)

Kind of off the wall and going in completely in the wrong direction i like the idea if a Proton Satria GTi!!!Lotous engineered suspension, recaro seats as standard along with all the mitsubishi influence and these days you can pick up tidy examples for relatively pocket change!!Apparently engine upgrades from the mitsubishi Evo family are pretty much bolt on,although ive never had one so can comment. ;)

for the road I'd agree but the OP was asking about track related weapons, and if its track use then that won't cut it, plus there are bushes to do (quite a few on the e36 to) however there is pleanty of kit about to make them work out there, and yes I agree, I'd buy another if I could find a decent one (saloon that is!)

Surely a £4k M3 would need work?

Agree that a decent kit and geo tweak will transform an E36.

Spend £500 quid on some decent 2nd hand suspension and some race pads and away you go

Wait til Matt spots that later, I think you may have suggested a possible winner lol :D

I have gone off the MX5, and the E36 still kina appeals to me. JER, SORT THAT E30 AND MAKE ME WANT ONE! ( though i still have a craving for a Vauxhall chevette V8!)

RichP: I am very tempted by a 75! I have seen this on Pistoheads already! Think i want a V6"!

My 309 was quicker at an alfa trackday at Aintree than all the alfas (apart from a track 75). None of the modded 75's could keep up

What about a Lancer 2000 or a manta with a red top 16v on tb's?

Fiat x19 or 131 (if you can find one) http://www.131mirafiori.com/

Or one of those strange looking Jap cars that you see in importers yards that normally end up drifting around a circuit somewhere?

Just off the top of my head so far

Some interesting cars in this list! Problem with RWD is that fewer manufacturers make RWD cars these days and some of the stuff you used to be able to pick up for peanuts is now stupidly expensive due to it being a classic. I've always wanted a mk1 Escort for some sideways amusement.

The Maxda MX5, never driven one, but is reckoned to be a fantastic handling car, you could easily get one of those in budget and up the power of it and make it track-day ready.

I'd vote for a Toyota MR2 mk2, plenty about and they're pretty cheap. You can either stick a V6 in it or you should be able to get a turbo'd one for your budget, pretty reliable too. Borrowed my dad's NA a few times, fun in the dry, takes some getting used to pushing on around the corners, it will spin rather than drift and you can feel that effect from the seat! Not so hot in the wet though... But then neither is my Honda S2000. Have been thinking of an MR2 myself to replace the S2000, the S is a bit expensive to keep!

As a random suggestion, how about a:

Volvo-340-3.jpg

Don't the R5 GTT lot take the 1.7 Volvo engine (From Renault heritage) as a large capacity conversion and then bolt the turbo back on?

RWD, cheap (has to be?) and turbo-able :D

Could be fun and I don't think you'd get more sleeper than that :P

You shouldn't joke about such things - here's Mark (Swordfish210) with his Volvo at Llandow a couple of years back... :D

Had me in tears of laughter watching it going round, but I don't think Mark rated it as a track weapon
