on the 1.6gti i have recently bought there is no strap across fuel tank from rear seat belt anchor point to rear beam,is this something that is vitally important to have or do people usually do away with it as i cannot understand why it would be missing?

Normally missing due to the fact they are a pain in the arse to get off so you normally end up butchering them. Dont think many people run them, I certainly wont unless I come across problems without it.

thanks for the reply,so basically people normally get rid of the strap and braket on beam and just leave the exhaust bracket connect to the 2 studs on floor pan?

I've always removed it, as Edd says it makes getting the beam off a pain and more often than not the studs shear off anyway. :o

Same here, less weight! :o

At least it means the beam may have been off for rebuild/replacement!!

I have never come across a plausible reason for them having them in the first place as they are not on base models or 309's IIRC.

Mostly correct - not present on 205 5dr models or on any 309's. Only found on 205 3dr models, both GTi and base model :o

i wish it did mean beam has been rebuilt the O/S arm is seized solid.
