Smokey 306 Hdi?

Recommended Posts

Not a 205 i know but I have a 306 hdi, drives fine, when I boot it say 3k in 3rd, I get black smoke, cruising at say 80, perfect, no smoke! Grez mentioned it may be leaky injector? Any ideas?

If it's high mileage, it's probably the injectors are getting tired - mine does the same thing to a degree, and that's on 182k now. Normally get a tale-tale ticking sort of sound from about 3200rpm onwards due to, I'm told, the injectors not being able to open and close fast enough.

injectors mate, black smoke is unburnt oil. or when was it last serviced? smetimes a clogged air filter doesnt let the correct airflow through

Serviced regular, has a kn panel filter, do's and always has made that ticking noise! New injectors would it be or recon them? Worth doing or just keep driving it?

+1 for injectors, over time they lose effectiveness.

personally i would be leaving them,so long as car performs ok and passes smoke test on MOT.

not sure if they can be reconned or are a change item on the hdi engines

same thing in a diesel :o

not sure on the commonrail injectors, but the older mechanical ones are supposed to last around 60k before needing refurbishment in an ideal world.

I've just adopted the "keep driving it" option - it's been doing it since I bought it around 25k miles ago, although it's been slowly getting worse over time. It still passed an MOT smoke test last month and still gets over 50mpg, so I'll just carry on driving it, especially given that a replacement set of injectors is worth more than the car!

I'll be interested to hear though if you can get HDi injectors cleaned/refurbished for sensible money though :o

I think you've made anyone on here who drives a diesel slightly paranoid....... :s

Older mechanical engined injectors needing refurbishment after about 60k..... mines on 228k and I'm pretty sure they've never been touched.... :s

often they never have, swapped the ones on mum's 405 at about 260k odd iirc, made a vast difference and still fine at 290k, drives so much better than my brothers 180k 306 dt, but that is on a naff Lucas pump, Bosch pump engines are so much nicer to drive.

You can get them refurbished with new nozzles etc but at ~£100+ per injector its questionable if its worth doing if everything else is fine.

It is possible the egr valve is getting tired & sticking, mine did & the car was hellishly smokey by comparison to normal but that was at all rpm's.

Made a stainless blanking plate to block it off & its much better.

Graham.
