Well, the stem seals themselves are about £2.50+vat each from the main dealer. I wouldnt like to comment on the labour though.

I live in ireland and it's for a friends car ,i got quoted 300 euro, which would be the same 250 pounds, is it a hard job, how long

would it take to do, would it just be seals needed, or would there be oil needed etc

Either head off or can do with head on - if the head gasket has never been done and cambelt is due, I'd take the head off and do the lot personally - have done it once with the head still on and it was a complete nightmare job.

If head off, you take out cam, lifters and valves (need valve spring compressor). Then IIRC an 11mm socket can be put over the seal and pop them off - then put the new ones on with socket again, they just tap on.

Of course then have to re-assemble.

When take everything apart, make sure all labelled and goes back in same place it came from. I'd also measure valve clearances beforehand and re-shim as appropriate.

Alternative is always to buy a fully refurbed head and just swap. If you aren't comfortable doing it yourself it may be the way to go.

I wouldn't have the skills for it myself now, so that wouldn't be an unreasonable quote with the work involved i would imagine, as i said it's for a friend and just trying to keep costs down as much as poss, as he is trying to get her out on the road, first car, insurance tax etc. car is finished just this that needs fixed and that's her.

ORB

I have my head on the bench at the moment, so i did mine just this evening.

I gave the head a right good service at the same time. It really is simple, I understand it is daunting if you have never done a head before, but it really is simple.

agreed mine is also off,had not been run since 2002 so when i bought it decided to remove it and change all gaskets/seals and reshim.

i remember doing the stem seals with head in situ many moons ago as an apprentice in pug dealer not the best job in the world much rather take head off personally.

Miles

Difficult to say, At €300.00 I would bite there hand off, I would start at £300.00 as factor in Head skim, And problems with the block and you can be screwed for big money.
