Gkn Driveshafts

Recommended Posts

General query really - Does anybody know a reputable source of GKN driveshafts (Either mail order or in Kent\Sussex)? The driveshafts on my Xsara HDi are starting to get a bit tired and making noises and so I'm on the lookout for some replacements. Would prefer either genuine or GKN as I've bad experiences with cheap crap before.

Can get genuine recon ones through the dealer for £150 - £160 each, was hoping GKN would be just as good but lsightly cheaper.

I thought the shafts were the same as the 306 but they aren't - they are fractionally shorter. Thats a pain as 306 parts are easy to find whereas Xsara parts are slightly harder!

Cheers

Ross

Can't you just fit Xsara VTS ones, as I'm assuming they're the same? They're plentiful and cheap as chips from people breaking them for the engines, many of them lowish mileage too.

Indeed, I might still have a pair in the garage, and if not, I'm sure the #1 VTS murderer Alastairh will have...

I could do, but to be honest with the mileage I do I'd prefer to fit new \ recon ones! :)

GSF do them, don't believe them if they say they don't. Only problem is they just have to order them in and see what comes, so you may have to be friendly with them.

My local GSF (Farnham) had GKN shafts in stock last time I bought some, I didn't specifically request them either, it just seemed to be all they stocked. :o

I've just bought some GKN ones for my 306 from GSF, cheap too (32 quid!)

Excellent, sounds good, I'll try GSF.

I don't have a branch near me so I'll probably phone them up and have a chat.

Firstly, I've just spent ruddy ages searching for this topic (that I remembered seeing a few days ago) because it's in the wrong damn section, so I'm going to ask a mod to move it to the correct sub-forum ;)

Secondly, I've been reading mixed opinions about GKN shafts recently, along with Tom Fentons recent topic about rogue shafts from GSF, so now I'm wondering if I should bother going to GSF or if there are any other decent suppliers I could try? I need the drivers side 309 GTI shaft. The nearest GSF to me now is Glasgow <_< , so that's a pain, and not worth the hassle if they are going to d*ck me around with the wrong shafts etc, plus this shaft is £77 plus VAT. There's a ECP in Edinburgh doing the shaft for about £52, which is a Q-Drive part. Then there's buypartsby.co.uk, but they have numerous different shafts available and I'm not clear on what is the correct part (I'm assuming some are for auto models and some for ABS equipped models.

Any other suggestions?

To be clear, the rogue shaft from GSF was a "Shaft tech" or similar brand- and a brand new shaft at that, not a recon.

However I've been back and had the discussion with the guy at my local GSF, the part number is the same, but he says it depends on what the warehouse send him- could be a GKN, could be a Shafttech. According to him the GKN shafts are increasingly difficult to get for some reason.

Anyway- one brand I have had good results from are "AMK" shafts- and according to Welshpug, this is where the Motaquip site directs you if you search for Motaquip driveshafts.

This is true, I was looking on the Motaquip website last week to see about the head gasket etc for my engine rebuild & when I clicked on the driveshaft pages it took me to the AMK site.

£40 for the headset including bolts, bargain. :D

Since GKN have shut up shop in the UK, the shafts have gone down the pan, I normally have around 1 in 4 that are OK to use, even out of the box failures are common now with all makes. So it really is pot luck

As said before I have even had a 205 shaft too short, I Have never worked that one out

Yep, well I've done some phoning around and it seems nobody can get GKN driveshafts for me, Eurocarparts said they "might be able too" but it would be a 4 week wait.

Citroen it is then, the OE recon shafts are £160 each, but at least I'll know the quality is there.

I have e-mailed Motaquip and this this the reply i received, does any one recognize any of these part number's ?

" Motaquip do have re-manufactured drive shafts in its range for this vehicle There are 6 different shafts that could be fitted DS3245 LH, DS3246 RH without ABS DS3003 LH, DS3004 RH with ABS 29 teeth DS3935 LH, DS3936 RH with ABS 48 teeth Motaquip do not re-manufacture these products themselves but I have checked with our supplier who has stock of all except for DS3004 Due to the age of the vehicle he will not be able to get further stock of this but can offer a "recon and return service" ie the worn part from the vehicle is sent to the re-manufacturer who refurbishes it and returns it to you This would normally take 7 to 10 working days Motaquip only supply to our Motor Factors customer base, a list of who can be found at www.motaquip.co.uk "

Cheers.

Edit - DS3003 & 4 are 'AMK' 1.9 205 shafts

DS3235 and DS3236 are 1.6 shafts. No idea what DS3935 are.
