How Much Taller Is A 1.9 Engine Compared With A 1.6

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about changing from a 1.6 a 1.9 8 valve engine in my Trials Special and am just wondering about what problems this might cause bearing in mind the longer stroke and resulting increase in the height of the block.

I know the sump will be a bit lower because of the spacer plate but what I'm concerned about is how much higher the cam cover and exhaust manifold will be. The chassis was built around a 1.6 and some of the tubes in the exhaust manifold area and cylinder head area might cause a problem.

So the question is how much taller is the 1.9?

the 1900 sump is smaller than the 1600.. i think with the spacer fitted to the 1900 sump its then the same hight as the 1600 sump

ive read and ive also just fitted a 1600 sump to my 1900 engine

1600 and 1900 cylinder heads are the same apart from the early heads..

i cant remember if the lobes on the 1600 and 1900 are the same hight tho. i know the 1600 cams are different from 1900s

That's a relief, but how do they acommodate the extra 15mm of stroke in a block that is no taller?

Mickie, I'm certainly not doubting you as I know almost nothing about these engines but why fit a spacer and a smaller sump if one sump would fit both?

Thank you both

Miles

Its not a spacer, It strengthens the bottom of the block as it twist's with higher power outputs

Ah, that explains it. Thank you Miles.

come on then ? will i be ok running a 1900 with a 1600 sump ? i had no idea about strength related to that spacer and have only ever read people fit the 1600 sump which i though a good idea with only 1 gasket

It will be just fine and isn't about to spontaneously explode - there's plenty of 1.9 8v and Mi16 engines out there working perfectly well without the spacer/stiffener plate fitted, some having covered tens of thousands of miles like that. It was only the 1.9 GTi and 1.9 Mi16 engines that had the plate anyway - all the other variants of the XU9 engine did fine without, as did XU5 and XU7 engines.
