Advance Timing Problems

Recommended Posts

Dover

Hi all, i have tried searching for similar posts but cant find any advice

I have a '93 1.9 gti with cat that i have been playing with for a few months now, finally got it on the road last weekend and i have a few issues with it.

Firstly, i replaced the head and re-shimmed the new one within the set tolerances, but it sounds real tappy. the oil pressure was a bit low, but after a an oil change the pressure guage now sits around the second to third mark when driving sensible on the motorway (Around 3000 rpm)

After reading a few posts, i think the noise might be pinking as it seems to be tappy underload and on idle, but is fine when deccelarting or running at high revs without load.

I have tried to adjust the dizzy cap, but no matter how much it turns there is no difference. I have checked it out with a strobe but i cant find the timing marks unless i advance the light up to +40 degrees.

Is this right?!?! I checked it with the engine fully up to temp, and have checked the timing belt itselfs and all the marks line up right.

Im stuck on this and any help would be appreciated :D

a cat equipped 205 doesnt run an adjustable distributor, the advance is controlled by the ecu like system used on the 1.9 MI16 (same afm)

It is physically adjustable, but does that mean it has no effect on the ignition timing when adjusted? i read that the AFM is adjustable, but i cant find the screw on mine. Is this also not adjustable?

Cheers Buddy

thinking about it, it may not be the same afm, you'd need to double check which system it has as there were Jetronic and Motronic cat quipped 205's, check the part number on the ecu.

if indeed it is the motronic system then indeed the timing does not alter when you rotate the body of the distributor.

Yeah its the motronic, should have mentioned that. what could cause the timing to run +40 degrees, cause that just doesnt seem right
