Moving Radiator For Tb's

Recommended Posts

rnotman67

I'm thinking of lowering the rad on my 205 and was wondering if anyone else has done this and if so what's the best way about it??

My reason being is to give more space for the Jenveys I've just fitted, I'm also gonna mount some form of ducting for cold air or to direct the warm air from the rad away from the inlet.

I haven't lowered my radiator at all but I am sure you can have plenty of info if you use the "search".

Anyway, here are what I have done to duct the cold air direct to the filter and drag the hot air out.

DrSarty

As suggested, try some searches for 'lower*+radiator'.

Also look for Tom Fenton's topics as he even had some lowering brackets for sale, and look in my Evo II thread to show another method.

I was looking into lowering the radiator on my 205 as I am fitting throttle bodies soon.As DrSarty said Tom Fenton is selling some lowering brckets, which look like a good job.On my car thougn I dont think a lowering bracket will work with the sump guard on it so I think my only option is a shorter alloy radiator such as the one which BakerBm sells which is about £350 I think.Shorter Rad .Well it is £300 but the fan is an extra £50.

you may try your luck in ebay. it was from a lancia integrale 16v.

don't be greedy to get the wider one from evo because that will be too wide for the bulge (or between the lines).

you also need a water tray underneath to avoid water gets into spark plug sockets.

My dad knocked up a couple of brackets for me that bolt to the cross member under the existing fan cowling, the rad then just sits that much lower, sitting in the standard pins on the bottom of the rad, the standard rubbers fit the holes in the brackets too. Very simple.

I just welded some L-shaped steel plates (just some bent 2.5/3mm steel of about 20 to 30mm wide) onto the back of the lower 'crossmember' (or whatever you call it), and the appropriate width apart and obviously with the height carefully planned and measured so as not to interfere with my sumpguard. If you then get a metal-matrix rad you can use some small bolts at the top to bolt some bracket affair to the top of the rad to secure it, and use the standard lower mounts with the rubbers pushed through your L-backets to hold the bottom.

On the next build I do, I'll be doing something more akin to Camerons solution, ie. removing the whole flimsy, rot-attracting crossmember and replacing with a sturdier square-section tube upon which I can make the lower mounts directly again.

It's a piece of piss, really.

i removed my crossmember completely and moved the rad to the front side of the light panel mounted on a piece of angle alluminium with the holes and mounting rubbers in it, ditched the entire fan assembly and fitted a slim line fan.

i have a good 4 inches between my gti6 inlet and the rad (did have tb's originally) but if i go with the turbo idea i will have to move it back to fit an intercooler.

There's tonnes of info on this subject, a quick search would have brought up anything you needed to know.

Could you show us the under side and the tray please? :)

here you go.

it should have covered the front part of cam cover and the spark plug cover.
