Distributor Differences?

Recommended Posts

MrG

I have a phase 1, and I also have a new distributor from H&H.

Problem is they've sent me a coil for a later car together with my refurbed/set up original distributor, and the wiring that goes to the distributor has the plug and two wires connected to it.

Now my car had a std old style coil and the original wiring from original distributor was a 3 wire cable to a connector that plugged into the 3 wire connection from the amplifier. So do you think I can just extend the wires from the amp and connect it to the plug and plug it into the distributor as before or will I have a problem? I have tried to extend the wiring as above but I now have no spark which leads me to believe they've set the distributor up as a later car?

So between the two phases (say 1and 2) what is the difference regards the wiring etc? I will call them Tuesday however I was hoping to have it solved by then however if I can't then I cannot make Marham which is a bummer (especially as its paid for!)

yep I am trying that, the problem is I now don't have a spark. I have extended the wiring so it plugs into the new connection on the distributor but as the 'new' plug they supplied was a two wire item leads me to believe I have a mismatch somewhere. Mine is a 3 wire item

The third wire is an earth for shielding the cable.

If they've sent you the original dizzy back, can you not unplug their cable and refit the original one? Or is it a case that they've hard wired the new cable so that you can't remove it?

well the connection plug is hard wired/fitted to the body of the dizzy, so now instead of the cable going from the dizzy and plugging into the amp connector (as before), I now have a plug that plugs into the dizzy and I am to wire that up to what was the original connection, however its that that's different. That other wire is definately an earth. There seems to be a red wire and a black from the new set up where as I have an earth (black) a red and a green wire on the original. So maybe I need to just wire in the equivalent red/black maybe? But if I do that what happens to that green one?

I'll revisit it Monday late am I think, undo what I've done and try again with some new (again) connectors, maybe one of the connections was failing? Failing that I'll need to have a chat with H&H on Tuesday.

well I've tried many different ways and its still not firing, I have fuel but no spark so this difference in wire numbers has to be the key, so it looks like Marham is a no go. What a bummer!

They must have set mine up as a later phase dizzy (which I can't see how considering they had my old one to refurbish)? Phone calls to be made tomorrow.

turns out they should have sent instructions/details with the new dizzy. The item on the side of the dizzy is the amplifier and this plus the coil they sent across was to completely replace what's fitted at present. I hope that trying to get it working hasn't caused any problems. I'll not be able to fit this now till Sunday.

So I expect I can just disconnect the wiring from the exg coil and amp and move these to the new coil and in theory it should run.

I'll just give you a little heads up regarding the dizzy.

The side where the rotor arm is there is 2 small screws(under plastic cover possibly) Just check to make sure they are tight !!

With my H&H dizzy the screws were loose and I broke down miles from home and wrecked my new dizzy, Not saying it's gonna be like that but worth a quick check mate.
