Oil Filter/cooler/exchanger

Do I really need to run the heat exchanger on my GTI?

I dont use it in any major anger, just the odd ragging here and there, and other than that it is used for a bit of a blast and commuting.

My current set up has both oil pipes leaking and the coolant drips at a rate of knots too. I know I can find another, but I just see it as over engineering. On my last GTi I had a cammed MI16 on carbs and ran it with just a filter to the block and had no issues.

My car is a J reg 1.9 with AC, PS, ABS. It runs the exchanger system with water pipes coming from the top hose.

Do I just remove all of the crap, install a top hose from a 1.6 and install a filter straight to the block, or am I talking crap? Will i be fouling any of the componants with the oil filter in its normal position?

I seem to remember the use of a R5 GT Turbo filter back in the day to overcome issues?

Tell me what I need to know dudes!

You don't need it, no, but what it does help with is getting the oil upto temperature quicker more than keeping it cool on track.

Removing it all and putting the 1.6 style parts on will work fine though - check that the threaded part stays in the block though, rather than coming out with the heat exchanged takeoff. Not a huge issue if it does though, as they're cheap from Peugeot.

is it the remote filter setup? I'd keep it as it makes oil changes a doddle, especially with a/c + PAS crammed in there.

I am not bothered about keeping the original remote setup, its it has been badly abused in its days and most of the mounting are broken. It leaks like a seive on a good day and it generally annoys me!

So will a standard filter go on with the PAS and AC or will I need some alternative filter?

I ask as I am gonna do another parts order tomorrow morning.

(Anthony, you say about the part being left in the block? do you mean the double ended threaded bit? the one where the filter actually attaches? )

Yes, the threaded part that sticks out of the block and which you screw the oil filter onto.

A standard filter should fit even with the A/C I'd imagine (although I've not personally tried) but if it's a bit tight, a Renault 19 16v (and probably plenty of other Renault) oil filter is about half the height and will easily clear the aircon rad etc.

It's tight, Mine has got the filter in the std position (Auto) and it's a mare to change, I'd stick with the remote set up if you can, shame I;ve got no room to fit one
