I Think I May Be Going Nuts?

Similar kind of thing to a thread below about ECp supplying the wrong parts, yet I dont think I have the wrong parts!

So, I got all my parts together to do a cambelt, HG and all of the other bits you do while you are at it.

I am taking my time over it as I have too many other commitments (wife, 2 babies and such like)

So, this evening, I get the kids off to bed, watch the rest of the football at the pub and come home, wife has all bases covered leaving me free for a couple of hours.

So, I go outside and allow myself an hour or two of stripping down. I get the inlet off and all of the crap at the top end. Found I have a snapped engine mount but this is no problem, so I proceed to do all of the inside the wheel arch bits.

Once I get the covers off the timing belt I am surprised and pissed off to find that I have the spring loaded cam belt tensioner rather than the later type that I expected. Bearing in mind my car is a J reg and has AC and ABS would this be the reason why?

The parts dept had my reg number, and do not often get it wrong.

What gives?

Thanks

law of sod + french manufacturing = wrong bits.

unless of course you check beforehand, and open the box before you leave the supplier to check the supplied part is correct too :)

Most if not all J-plate's have the earlier style tensioner from what I've seen.

It only seems to be some K-plate onwards that have the later escentric tensioner (I say some, as any K/L plates that had sat around for a while before being registered - like all 309 Goodwoods for example - will have the earlier setup still)

Mines a K and I found the exact same thing when I took my cambelt covers of not very long ago! My motor factors had given me the eccentric tensioner so you're not alone! Because motor factors work on number plates and officially they had eccentric from J onwards they assume its eccentric, if either of use had gone to pug and told them the full VIN they would have given us the right part!

Yeah, this is what threw me, my last GTi had a later type tensioner, and it was H232SUB (Sorrento LTD edition 1.6)

Odd.

^^ that!!

afaik the later type arrangement can be retrofitted, possibly needing the later covers as well, though I haven't tried this the blocks dont differ where it counts from what I remember.

Pug won;t know either, the system will say both types would be fitted, but as said all J's would use the spring type, I'll have to check mine as I;ve not looked yet as its the same spec as yours

New belt and tensioner on the bench now. All that is left to get is the energy to sort it!
